Working to bridge the contrast between inside/outside, nature/urban and rest/action, the design for the sports college creates meeting points between the different zones of activities.
The construction of the new beach volley hall and a multifunctional and urban courtyard, will flip the centre of activity from the original front side to the back and create an informal and socially focused common area for the students.
URBAN POWER developed the architectural design for the extension of Idrætshøjskolen Sønderborg – from the initial studies to the final solutions.
The college is experiencing a demand that they currently struggle to meet. With the beach volley hall, new housing and the multifunctional courtyard, the school is able to accommodate more students for a broader curriculum.
The hall will feature facilities for beach sports and dressing rooms, besides conference rooms, either for the schools own use or for renting out. The concrete courtyard allows a good flow between facilities and encourages urban sports on a range of horizontal and vertical surfaces, while the centrality of it makes it a natural social space for the students to gather for formal or informal happenings.
