This is the highest winning entry in the competition organized by Hanoi City to find a solution to a long-standing problem in Hanoi: How to effectively exploit and manage the land area along the Red River while still meeting flood safety requirements. Transforming Hanoi from a city with its back to the river into a true riverside city.
Since the 90s, Hanoi has organized many competitions and called on many experts from Singapore and Korea to help with the desire to come up with the best solution for the Red River area. There have been large projects, riverside urban areas proposed, however, these projects all encountered a fundamental difficulty: the problem of flooding of the Red River. After many years, these projects are still only on paper and Hanoi has an extremely messy riverside area, full of slums, but at the same time very green with crop fields and fruit gardens that feel like a rural area right next to the crowded city.
Currently, the city has shifted from real estate investment to building a large-scale, ecological park. This is a right step, but it needs to be approached with caution. There are many projects in Vietnam that, when built, have had a negative impact on the environment and natural landscape. These are artificial, flashy but soulless amusement parks. This is a pity, when the public could have enjoyed the beautiful nature, but instead they have to visit an artificial product that imitates nature in a clumsy, unsustainable way.
It is this contradiction of development and conservation that makes us think: what should be done, and what should not be done with this area? What is the true value that our ancestors left behind, and in turn, we will leave to the next generation?
If the project is formed, it will preserve and create nearly 400 hectares of green trees and natural landscapes. Including 296 hectares of agricultural land, 33.5 hectares of green parks and 61.7 hectares of natural forests, along with hundreds of hectares of water surface landscapes. Preserving the natural ecosystem, habitat of wild animals and plants. Significantly meet the shortage of trees and public playgrounds, and organize cultural and artistic events for the people of the capital.
The project not only provides agricultural products but also educates about culture, experiential agriculture, and art for children and future generations of people in the capital. At the same time, it also changes the face of the capital when accessed from major bridges such as Tu Lien, Long Bien, Chuong Duong, etc. The park is also built to change the population and commercial and service activities around the project. Hanoi will have a new cultural and culinary destination outside the Hoan Kiem Lake and West Lake area.
