ZAHARA Contemporary Hosting

Zahara was the headquarters of an ancient Sicilian fief of citrus, olive and almond trees on the border between the Monti Iblei and the Piana di Catania. Of a larger general project that includes the remodeling and re-functionalization of all the buildings and the closest external spaces, the sequence of interventions carried out has been concentrated on the main building.Zahara is a geological pudding coated with the grain of the Etna colors, the red of the Ghiara and the black of the Azolo. A two-storey building with a tower on top of the roof was built with the material obtained from the excavations, necessary to level the rock and obtain the horizontal plan for the building.Zahara is the container of micro-cameras and fragments. Holmen Industrial Area

On behalf of shipowner Holmøy Maritime, Snøhetta has designed Holmen Industrial Area, a highly sophisticated and colorful 6,000 square meter fishing facility situated on the eastern side of Sortlandssundet in the archipelago of Vesterålen in Northern Norway. By assembling all employees and top-notch facilities on the same site, this bold new facility ensures the regions continued international success within Norway’s second largest industry – an industry worth over one billion dollars annually. The new facility intelligently blurs the distinction between the rawness of the fishing industry with a more polished corporate allure by subtly merging Holmøy Maritime’s trawling, fish farming and fish processing business and the company’s headquarte... 01/07/2016 Sauna culture Sauna bathing is an essential part of Finnish culture and national identity. There are only 5,4 million Finns but 3,3 million saunas. Public saunas used to be common in bigger cities but now that most new apartments have sauna of their own, public saunas have decreased dramatically in number. There are only a couple remaining. As a sense of community is becoming a more and more important part of new urban culture, many new public saunas are being planned. With Löyly (meaning the steam that comes when you throw water on hot stones in a sauna) Helsinki will offer foreign visitors a public sauna experience all year round - a must when visiting Finland. Process The project started from the city of Helsinki... More

Real Properties Offices

This office renovation provides a new home for the property managers of Jackson Square, located in Hamilton, ON. The 40-year-old Jackson Square Mall is an indoor shopping mall and commercial complex located in the city core. Built throughout the 1970’s, Yale Properties have been rebranding the mall to rid it of its outdated image, to better integrate it with the surrounding urban fabric, and give it a new distinct identity. Similarly, the Jackson Square Management’s offices were outdated and incongruent with the mall’s new branding. This project is one of 15 separate construction initiatives that form the overall rejuvenation of this property. The existing space was a raw concrete space, initially designed to be a restaurant, but was never... More

Enter the Diamond

Enter the diamond is a functional sculpture installed in Paris at the heart of a Haussmann apartment. This volume made of birch wood contains two shower-rooms. By creating this tiny singular space within the wider space of the apartment, we play with density variations. This sculpture fits perfectly with the minimalism of the place, though it contrasts fiercely with the moulding and the Haussmann classicism. This tension generates a fictional potential that plays with the imagination of the inhabitants. Our aim is to create an internal landscape in this entrance-room visible from all other rooms, including the kitchen, the 3 bedrooms and the living-room. Beyond its function - Shower at Tiffany’s - this installation is a form of esthetical e... More

High-tech wooden house

A very special wooden house is located in the middle of a flowering meadow in the Dachau hinterland. It was built in 2011 using spruce, larch, pine and birch wood – without the utilisation of chemicals or artificial tools. Featuring a photovoltaic system, solar energy, a heat pump and intelligent building technology from Gira, the result was a house which is ideally ecological and yet healthy, convenient and nearly zero-energy. It produces more electricity than it consumes. When searching for a wooden house supplier, the owner encountered Erwin Thoma and his company. He constructed the building only of wood, without glue, screws or nails. The walls, ceilings and roof consist of wooden elements which are up to 40 cm thick − they are a co... More
