Casalunga Golf Resort

The CGR project was developed in response to an assignment entrusted directly to Antonio Iascone by proprietor Gianluca Vacchi, who needed to increase the floor space and extend the range of functions offered by the Castenaso Golf Club, which is sited just beyond the outskirts of Bologna. The brief involved the construction of five new building units, a swimming pool, and an al-fresco bar to complete the existing facilities of the original clubhouse, which was located in a converted farmhouse known as the Casalunga. The buildings provide space for a reception centre, clubhouse, a spacious and functional changing room with golf-bag storage, a fitness centre annexed to an open-air swimming pool and solarium, and an accommodation centre with... Selah Residence

This four-bedroom residence, situated high on a plateau in the arid landscape of eastern Washington, offers sweeping views across the agricultural valley to the Cascade Mountains and provides a dramatic backdrop to the apple orchards below. Our clients wanted a home that, while distinctly modern, drew inspiration from the century-old, stone-clad gabled farmhouses in the area.    The design takes its formal language from these homes of the past, and strips it down to its essentials. Extraneous details such as eaves, gutters, and other embellishments are omitted, yielding a simplified, spare aesthetic. The 5,857-square-foot composition is bookended by two tall stone chimneys, while a stone and steel trellis runs north to south in... More

Paso Robles House

For an active, entertaining, modern blended family, we set out to reimagine the classic farmhouse concept by combining traditional architectural forms with a contemporary open floor plan. The entertaining and family spaces, the heart of the project, are housed in the double height ‘barn’ volumes, which dissipate at their base to seep out into a central communal courtyard and existing pool. Indoors is outdoors and outdoors is indoors. Set in the rolling hills of the Paso Robles wine region, the farmhouse grows from the roots of a multi-generational family farm and vineyard. To root the home in the landscape, we chose agrarian materials native to California – the ‘barns’ clad in western red cedar and corrugated... More

House in Jumonjimachi

Yokote Basin in Akita Prefecture, which is approximately 1,000 square meters, surrounded by enormous rice fields overlooking scattered farmhouses and mountains. It is one of the areas that have the heaviest snowfall with long winters and short summers. There was a challenge of how to utilize such a large site area due to its hot and humid summer and cold and snowy winter, which is a climate characteristic of basin, with limited budget.   The solution was to assemble the garage, the sunroom, and the residence with all same 3640 millimetres square units of the same configuration, and wrapped in a large roof with a slope that drops snow. This plan enabled the low-cost, short-period construction and maximized the long site area, which ext... More

The Edifice

“I need solitude. I have come forth to this hill at sunset to see the forms of the mountains in the horizon—to behold and commune with something grander than man. Their mere distance and unprofanedness is an infinite encouragement. It is with infinite yearning and aspiration that I seek solitude, more and more resolved and strong; but with a certain weakness that i seek society ever.”- Henry David Thoreau, journal, 14 august 1854.   Edifice: “a building, especially an imposing one.” Or as “a complex system of beliefs.”    The edifice, is a modest 500 square foot cedar cabin located in Fremont, New York. Approximately two hours northwest of New York City nestled in the woods of the... More

Lake Geneva Residence

We’ve created a modern farmhouse that extends into the natural prairie landscape, providing a humanistic experience in natural light underneath vaulted ceilings. The interior experience is intended to mirror the exterior feeling.   Our client purchased 19 acres of land in Southern Wisconsin with the goal of spending their time surrounded by the native prairie that they themselves had rehabilitated. The couple wanted a single-story home that would not dominate the restored prairie, but rather enable the interior experience to be an extension of it. We conceived the project as a modern farmhouse, a building typology centered around the outdoors, to meet the needs of the client. The residence consists of three vaulted shapes nestl... More
