Bed Tower Addition: Henry Ford Allegiance Health

As part of Henry Ford Allegiance’s master plan, they wanted to provide more high-quality, single-occupancy inpatient rooms to deliver additional privacy to patients. To make strides toward this goal, HED first evaluated post-occupancy reviews from existing patient floors and determined best practices for the new rooms. Despite having to work within a set structural grid, the Henry Ford Allegiance addition would be all single bed rooms, and each would allow any level of care. The HED team built full-size mock-ups of the patient rooms and conducted review sessions with both the caregivers and patient advocates to test the space and provide feedback, generating real-time design adjustments to the model.  The result is a univers... Corona Treatment Centre

We are currently experiencing a global crisis that affects almost all areas of public life and has pushed many health systems worldwide to their limit. In Berlin, the decision was made to build a corona treatment centre on the Berlin Trade Fair (Messe Berlin) in order to reduce bottlenecks in the provision of clinical care. In a matter of weeks, a reserve hospital with almost 500 beds was built in one of the exhibition halls, which creates additional capacity should the number of infections increase again.  The layout of the treatment centre is based on modular clusters with 16-24 beds and a central service zone. The structure of the clusters is adjustable depending on the intensity of care. The advantage of the cluster system, in add... More

Max Healthcare, an oncology-focused hospital located in the healthcare hub of East Delhi, renders a seamless functional extension to the existing block on the two-and-a-half-acre tight-fitting rectangular site. The planning and interiors of this 150 bed-facility rely heavily on evidence-based design principles to provide a highly responsive, healing environment to its users.   The façade exhibits the internal program externally. The parking floors are clad with white cardiographic louvres, followed by a unitised curtain wall for the ambulatory floors and large punched windows for the in-patient floors above. The replicated ‘examination pods’ on the ambulatory floor enable simpler way-finding for the patients and eff... More

Neonatal Care Unit

Our goal has always been to awaken a playful mood in a rigorous, complex hospital environment. A key decision concerning the Neonatal Care Unit project was to divide it into three circular areas that share the same entrance space, integrating them, but also creating small groups with emphasis on personal attention. This strategy has allowed us to have an efficient flow of people, avoiding corners and reducing the stress level in an emergency. It also helps parents in their transition into a daily life routine by providing ambiences that help them move away from a sense of institutional design. In the hospital we work with a complete immersion methodology. That gives us the opportunity to perceive the atmosphere that surrounds the... More
