Fürst & Friedrich

The Fürst & Friedrich office and retail development in the centre of Dusseldorf is a striking new build that does much to enhance the area around the city’s popular Kirchplatz. Designed by slapa oberholz pszczulny | sop architekten, its clean lines and pared-down architecture, measuring 115 metres in length, bring a calming note to the streetscape and incorporates a fine and carefully preserved classical facade at the centre of the structure.   “For an architect, seeing a building you’ve designed finally become a reality is the acid test. Keeping the classical facade required courage and we are thankful that the developer, Art-Invest Real Estate, was happy to follow this idea. That makes us all the more pro... More

Mundo Verde Bilingual Public Charter School

Mundo Verde is a bilingual public charter school located in the District of Columbia and is the first green-focused charter school in the City. The school's elementary school and childhood annex achieved LEED Gold and Platinum.  It is also an AIA 2018 COTE Top Ten Award winning project. Jury comments include “The project is a compelling example of a renovation—and an equally compelling addition—that improves the entire site.   The sustainable practices, in particular, went well beyond the buildings themselves.” The school’s curriculum is based in expeditionary learning, where students learn through the active exploration of the world around them. Awarded a shuttered 1920s-era school building and sit... More

Aakash Healthcare

Located in an urban pocket of New Delhi, a LEED gold-rated building, Aakash Super-Speciality Hospital has been conceptualised around the principles of Healing Architecture. Planning a central, open courtyard with a water body that draws inspiration from Japanese zen gardens and a landscaped refuge area is an attempt to break away from the institutional character of the building.  Patients and their families are invited into the building by a multi-height entrance foyer, imbued with a warm colour palette and the aroma of coffee. The carefully planned departments on the upper floors are organised around the courtyard, allowing for an effortless horizontal and vertical circulation to improve utilitarian efficiency and patient experience.... 150 North Riverside

The 150 North Riverside site is located prominently at the confluence of the three branches of the Chicago River and less than one block away from one of Chicago's busiest commuter train stations. With exposed railroad tracks on the west side of the site and the city requirement for a riverwalk on the east side, the remaining area on which to build was considered impossibly narrow, and the site sat undeveloped for decades. As most of the viable office sites were built over time, the developer decided that an unconventional approach was required for this prime parcel. Utilizing a unique core-supported structure with a very small footprint at grade, the design resolves the site challenges and provides a 54-story Class A office tower with eff... More

Vanderbilt University School of Nursing

The new 30,000-square-foot addition to Vanderbilt’s School of Nursing was initially conceived as a vertical expansion of the existing Frist Hall to accommodate the School’s continued growth and ensure the School will continue to attract and recruit the best health sciences students and faculty.   After initial programmatic development proved vertical expansion infeasible, the design team proposed an innovative atrium-based approach. With the expansion displacing a heavily-utilized open space, the design team saw an opportunity to introduce a new outdoor gathering area and remove existing surface parking. This approach enabled the long-term protection of the second oldest trees on campus. A new, four-story atrium connects... More

Space Matrix Shanghai Office

3 things that happen when designers design their own office space   As a part of our global expansion plans, Space Matrix branched out into China through the successful acquisition of Muraya last year. Our initial conversations with Muraya told us that this interior design and construction company shared a lot of our core values and cultural beliefs. Together with their talented team, we looked forward to better servicing our clients in Australia, India and Southeast Asia.   But first, we needed a gorgeous office for our newly expanded team in Shanghai. We wanted to rebrand the existing space to reflect its affiliation to the larger Space Matrix family. Moreover, the way we work has changed a lot over the last few years, and w... More

Springdale Library

In the City of Brampton, about 45 minutes west of Toronto, the Springdale Library and Komagata Maru Park provides the suburban community with a new public library and community park. RDHA’s goal was to create an inclusive gathering place, a counterpoint to the otherwise flat suburban area, and a point of pride for the city. The project site was physically constrained, framed by a commercial plaza to the east, a main road to the south, and a natural ravine to the north and west. The architects positioned the library as close to the street as possible, in order to solidify the building’s presence with the street, preserve the site’s natural topography and irrigation patterns, and channel interior views towards the ravine. Beiqijia Technology Business District

The landscape site area is approximately 60,000 square meters. The site is a mixed use development, including residential, offices and retail. The overall site is designed to consider the LEED Gold accreditation, through effective and efficient use of water, reduction of urban heat island effect by decreasing the amount of paved surfaces and increasing the green ratio, taking into account the microclimate of each zone, by screening the north-westerly winter winds and welcoming the south-easterly summer winds that are cooled further by passing over a large water feature in the south. Banco Popular Luca de Tena

Two years after starting the Project for the Calle Abelias (stage I) we were commissioned to develop a proposal designed for a different financial situation, to execute the building in Calle Luca de Tena.   This 40,000 m2 office program also had to act as the bank’s representative headquarters, and contain the spaces dedicated to chairmanship and board of administration. The world economic crisis made it necessary to rethink various aspects: resource- and cost-effective optimizing per square meter and employee.   It is obvious that the easiest way of reducing costs in buildings is to separate the light from the perimeter by increasing the floorage. The less façade per square meter, the cheaper the building. The b... More
