Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine

This laboratory was designed to be sophisticated enough to entice internationally acclaimed scientists, bold enough to symbolize the state of Connecticut's commitment to advanced research, yet practical enough for an economic nonprofit organization serious about its mission. Centerbrook, in collaboration with Tsoi/Kobus Design of Cambridge, Massachusetts, designed the $135 million Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine research facility. A nonprofit research institution based in Maine and with facilities in California as well, JAX has a staff of 1,400 professionals nationwide and is a designated National Cancer Institute research center. Founded in 1903, The Commonwealth Club provides national audiences with impartial programs on politics, economics, culture and the environment featuring world-renowned speakers with weekly national broadcasts in the longest running U.S. radio program. ”Game On” is a LEED Certified Gold ground-up home resulting from a historic landmark lot split in which the neighboring historic home from the 1890s was originally on one large lot. The historic home was picked up and placed on a new foundation creating a vacant lot for “Game On.” The design was required to be approved by Aspen’s Historic Preservation Commission and needed to stand on its own while being contextual with the historic resource. Extending 260 feet into Washington, D.C.'s Potomac River, the project—DC's first office building to be built on a pier—transforms an existing 1950s pier on the Washington Channel into a Class A office building and is the main cruise depot for the chartered ships of Entertainment Cruises.  Pier 4 brings new vitality to the waterfront, with a 30,000-square-foot design that sits lightly upon the existing pier and canopy and provides users with spectacular view corridors and natural light.
