Tulane University A.B. Freeman School of Business

Tulane’s Freeman School of Business is comprised of two buildings in the heart of campus. It has seen explosive growth of students, faculty and an evolving learning environment. Tulane set out to unify two halls into one complex by adding a 45,000 sq. ft. four-story addition and renovating 40,000 sq. ft. of classrooms and lecture halls.Inspired by Tulane’s mascot, the Wave and several 100+ year old oak trees lining the street, a scalloped curtain wall was designed as the heart of the project. Given the historical significance of the trees and weather-related conditions that are an ongoing threat to New Orleans, it was critical to preserve the trees and provide protection against extreme weather. Additionally, LEED Gold was a core criteria.T... More

Dwight Field Biology Center

How do we express the green in building, especially on a large, pristine nature preserve?   The buildings of traditional cultures of the world offer some good examples, because they were forced to evolve from successive trial and error to become comfortable, secure, delightful,... The Tides Brentwood

Our goal in designing this LEED Gold apartment building near Wilshire Boulevard was to engage the neighborhood and celebrate the iconoclastic spirit of Los Angeles. The block was a formerly drab area, dwarfed by bulky office buildings to the South. The triangulated site fronts a large parking lot across the street, and the building’s prominent corner at the Bundy and Goshen intersection is a locus of stalled commuting cars.  We deepened the unique sense of place, Southern California, by pooling of ecologies from around the site, specifically its nearby Pacific Ocean, 3.5 miles West, its predominant sunshine, and it lofty palm trees that border the site itself.   We reflected these contextual elements in the two exposedNorth and East elevatio... Loyola Marymount University Life Sciences Building

Los Angeles-based CO Architects designed the Life Sciences Building for Loyola Marymount University (LMU) to address the college’s desire to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration. The integration of three project objectives—“interdisciplinary collaboration,” “science on display,” and “sustainability”—informed the design process to produce a building that acts as a daily teaching tool.  Its innovative design—with a play of transparency and solid, and tension between orthogonal and sinuous lines—establishes a new architectural standard for the campus.  Faculty offices and laboratories are based on research focus rather than department.  As a result, the buil...
