Memorial Elementary School

History:After a devastating fire destroyed most of Memorial Elementary School’s original building, DIGroupArchitecture was commissioned to design a brand new facility for 650 students in grades Pre-K thru 5. Collaboration with the district and consideration for the school’s history were paramount, resulting in not only a state-of-the-art learning facility, but also a welcoming public space for the community. Site Design:The building is set back from the street creating a transition space to the main entrance. Separate bus and parent drop-off driveways ease congestion for vehicular access while pedestrians follow alongside the “Memorial Walk,” a ceremonial path dedicated to all members of the armed services. The walkway includes five seating... More

Bishop’s University Library Learning Commons

Founded in 1958, Bishop’s University Library (formerly the John Bassett Memorial Library) in Sherbrooke serves the 3,500 students of Bishop’s University and Champlain Regional College. Thanks to a redesign by the architectural firm Lemay, with new lighting designed in collaboration with the lighting agency LumiGroup, the library is now a comfortable, well-lit work environment. Stéphane Groleau Bishop’s University Library has three levels: the basement, ground floor and second floor. All were in dire need of a refresh. Over the years, the library’s stacks had become so densely packed that they blocked most of the available natural light, despite the ample size of the building’s windows. Because it h... More

Riverside Park Pavilion

Overlooking the Charles River and within a public park for the City of Cambridge, Harvard University’s underground parking garage exhaust vent shaft penetrates the site, requiring a redesign of the shaft’s exterior envelope and the integration of a pergola structure. The “movement” of the river and the “canopy” of the trees along Memorial Drive are reflected in the design concept and detailing as the wood, steel, and cable truss canopy “frames” views of the Charles River. The wood clad pergola structure provides shaded seating and community gathering spaces which support the adjacent park. The planning process was challenging to address all of the different organizations needs and desires. We worked closely with the City of Cambridge, Harva... More

Sousse and Bardo Memorial

George King Architects have completed the Sousse and Bardo Memorial, a monument dedicated to the 31 British nationals who lost their lives and all those affected by the two terrorist attacks in Tunisia in 2015. The memorial was opened in March by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, during an unveiling ceremony attended by around 300 guests. The design was inspired by the fluid geometry of flowing water, frozen in place, as if time has stood still at the moment of the attacks. At the centre of the memorial is a sculpture titled ‘Infinite Wave’’ which recreates a single wave formed from 31 individual streams, one fo... Museum Heldenberg, Austria

The private shrine erected by a 19th century army enthusiast in honor of the Imperial and Royal Austrian Army is a well-known curiosity. A supplier to the military and creditor of the great Austrian commander, Radetzky, erected here around the Field Marshall`s burial place stelae, obelisks and even a small-scale columnar hall – a kind of Forum Romanum with Legoland dimensions that pays homage to famous war heroes. For the Lower Austrian regional exhibition the decaying complex has been completely renovated and enhanced by the addition of a new exhibition space, where themes other than military history can also be presented. The architects had no wish to enter into competition with the filigree 19th century complex and thus the exhibition bu... More

Temporary memorial at Regjeringskvartalet

In November 2017, 3RW arkitekter were mandated by Statsbygg to design a temporary memorial in the Oslo governmental quarters, after the terrorist attack on July 22, 2011. The memorial is going to be in use in the period until the new governmental quarters have been completed. A permanent memorial will then be integrated into this development. The temporary period is thus relatively long seen from an urban development perspective (10 years) and during this period the memorial will be close to one of the largest construction sites in the country.Prior to our involvement, Statsbygg had conducted an investigation of various sites for where in the governmental quarter the temporary memorial would be located. It had been concluded that the memori... More

Microsoft NERD Center

The Microsoft New England Research and Development Center (NERD) at 1 Memorial Drive has long been a center of technology innovation in the Kendall Square community. As one of six Microsoft global R&D sites, it has a strong focus on the engineering development of new software products across multiple platforms. It was important for Microsoft to remain true to their brand of technology being an integral part of daily life, and with increasing pressure on recruitment and retention of the best talent, as well as from the tight real estate market in Cambridge, Microsoft chose to rethink its sense of place at the NERD Center. This effort focused on three aspects: reimagining how its employees work and come together to invent; a complete reth... More

Mons Memorial Museum

The edifice of the Machine-à-Eau enjoys a key position in the civilian, architectural and urbanism history of the city of Mons. The listed building remains at the heart of an ambitious, complex project, since both contemporary extensions complete the historic building on both sides, encompassing it is a whole bearing the sense of its new function. The project responds to two urbanism components: one is founded on the evolution of the city (revolution of the behaviour of a movement in the nineteenth century). This notion of hinge will make the building into the articulation of the project. The second designates the immediate environment of the Machine-à-Eau, which is made up of an indefinite sum of spaces that deserved to be rehabilitated.The... More

Musée Atelier Audemars Piguet

The Musée Atelier's spiral-shaped pavilion, designed by BIG and realized by the Swiss architecture office CCHE, seamlessly rises on walls of structural curved glass. A feat of engineering and design, it is the first construction of its kind to be built at such altitude. The curved glazing entirely supports the steel roof, while a brass mesh runs along the external surface to regulate light and temperature. The green roof further helps regulate temperature while absorbing water. The spiral has been designed to perfectly integrate the surrounding landscape. The floors follow different slants to adapt to the natural gradient of the land and provide the basis of the museum's inner layout stretched into a linear continuous spatial experi... More

The Mount Herzl Memorial

Mount Herzl Memorial Hall, finished in September 2017, was excavated in the Jerusalem mountain to form an intimate space for a personal and collective experience of commemoration. Above the hall, the mountain was reconstructed with an undulating funnel shaped formation of bricks which opens the hall to the sky, flooding the void with natural light. Kimmel Eshkolot Architects was selected by the Israeli Ministry of Defence to design the memorial in 2006. The second key element to their design concept, apart from the space of the hall, was a 250 meter long continuous “Wall of Names” that wraps around the central sculptural brick structure. Following a spiral ramp up the memorial, the wall is built of 23,000 bricks, each individually engraved... More
