Background and original appearance: abandoned for a long time, but with great potential The 809 factory is located in Xialao Creek, the suburb of Yichang City, Hubei Province, China, which is about 30 minutes’ drive from downtown. Once a military factory, it was gradually shut down and abandoned in the 1990s. The project covers an area of about 3 hectares and a construction area of about 13000 square meters. The project’s location in the heart of the West End neighborhood of Washington DC, is located at the prominent northeast corner of M Street and 23rd Street. The base of the building is proudly pronounced on M Street with a perforated corrugated metal-clad red box of the apparatus bay. The main public spaces are located in a two-story glass box along 23rd Street. The use of light materials of metal and glass convey openness and agility. Posturing above this box, is a rectangular volume encompassing the two-story squash club that recedes on M street and cantilevers on 23rd street. When OTTOTTO studio removed the plaster from the walls of this house, two imposing stone walls were revealed. Their beauty made it inevitable to keep them in sight, adding just a new layer, in metallic mesh, to blend the 20th century with the new structure and skylight. As it is common in the center of Porto, Portugal, the house is narrow, long and has only two fronts: the challenge was to bring more light to the semi-basement and to all the interior spaces; drawing a single cut in the roof was the solution - a "square ring", with a constant width of 70 cm, that crosses the three floors and is overlooked by eight windows. DMARK won a competition in Georgia for the refurbishment and expansion of the Meskheti (Akhaltsikhe) Professional State Drama Theatre.   The foundation of the professional theater was laid in Akhaltsikhe in 1936. During the Civil War (1941), the theater was temporarily closed. In 1942 the work resumed. In 1950, the theater was closed, and in January 1967 it was rebuilt and renamed the Meskheti State Theater. On the pool side of Naoshima, renowned as an island of art and architecture, I designed a small public space where a variety of people including local residents and tourists, can relax. I anticipate that it would function as a community space and a new landmark. The town of Naoshima consists of 28 islands. We decided to create one more, the 29th island. The space is softly enveloped in a white metal mesh structure. Outside, it resembles an irregular stone, floating like an island on the ground. Inside, the space also has an irregular topography, allowing people to find a place where they feel comfortable and sit down. Casco Loft is an interior design project developed by FABRICations for one of the Superlofts in theHouthavens District, in Amsterdam. The three story dwelling takes advantage of the flexibility of the structure to deliver an innovative experience of a housing interior, in line with the resiliency principles of FABRICations.   The design relies on a range of strategies that aim to privilege interaction and flexibility, encouraging shared activities and free use. Influenced by its location in an older financial district, the concept for the restaurant was to reference the rustic glamour of a mid-century resort town such as Acapulco which in the 1940’s and 50’s became a fashionable place for Hollywood elites to vacation and dine.   The main feature of the space is a recycled marble terrazzo bar which spans the length of the space. Beside the bar is a series of wood and glass cabinets that separate the front and back of house while still allowing for a visual connection. We easily found a mutual language with the art director of Balthazar and reached an understanding of the audience. This made it possible to quickly outline the concept, to understand what kind of institution it would be and start the building process. The building of the Bessarabian market (a.k.a. Bessarabka) is a monument of architecture. It is under the protection of UNESCO, that is, no changes can be made. Any architectural decision should be coordinated with the administration of the building and with the city – this paperwork remains time.
