Moxy and Residence Inn Munich

Rock-n-roll Moxy meets chilled-out Residence Inn in Munich’s trendy Werksviertel quarter Opposites attract. In Munich, neon pink and taupe now go hand-in-hand. Following their successful cooperation on the dual-branded Moxy and Residence Inn property in Frankfurt, Swiss operator SV Group called on JOI-Design again to interpret this model for its Plaza development in Werksviertel, Munich’s former factory district. The high-energy Moxy hotel is as much a contrast as it is a complement to the extended-stay apartments next door. Sir Victor Hotel

Barcelona is a vibrant city where the mountain meets the sea and where culture, culinary, architecture and invention are dazzlingly omnipresent. Inspired by the spirit of the place, Baranowitz + Kronenberg introduce Sir Victor as an equally compelling social hub which draws the city from Passeig de Gracia into its very heart and runs it through its meticulous open plan of myriad living spaces and gushing human streams.B+K designed the street level as a gradual transformation of energies; starting with communal spaces that celebrate a strong sense of arrival going through semi-communal lounging around a bonfire and a 360 degrees engaging bar and culminating with private gathering at Mr. porter's chef's table.Materiality, lighting and texture... Jane Hope Residence

Exemplifying the versatility of Banker Wire’s architectural mesh in residential applications, designer and homeowner Jane Hope, incorporated an antique plated SZ-3 wire mesh within the design of her custom fireplace. Thoughtfully selected for its unique semi-transparent characteristics, the metal mesh compliments the honest, raw material design, creating a feature that is instantly recognized for its sleek form and striking aesthetic. Because the fireplace is the focal point in the center of the space, Jane Hope was looking for a material that would allow the light to pass through the top portion of the unit, while maintaining a similar visual heft that the other materials in the room—wood, concrete and stone—provide. She... More

arts studio 16

Located in Travessa da Pereira on the picturesque Graça neighbourhood, this project was a defying one. It was about converting an area, hidden inside a working class villa built in the first decade of the XX century, into an arts studio. © Ricardo Oliveira Alves Whilst approaching the space, the first conclusion is that it required a blunt but balanced identity. So, we had to be bold enough to tease new feelings and atmospheres, without leaving behind the sense of overall harmony so precious and necessary to artists in their creative processes. © Ricardo Oliveira Alves According to the clients briefing, the project must contemplate painting, sculpture and photography spaces, as well as common services, like a ki... House in Darlinghurst

At night its translucent glass brick crown glows like a lantern, and by day, the brick house rests politely, familiarly, yet slightly unsettlingly, among its neighbours. The building sits in a density built back lane in East Sydney, surrounded by Georgian and Victorian terraces and early factory buildings. A rich language of face brickwork and industrial detailing surrounds it, and surprisingly, a couple of massive, mature eucalypts extend their gracious limbs over the site.   The building had undergone a previous conversion, with a rather underwhelming floor and stair structure. The brief was to extend this beautiful little brick jewel, transforming it into a three-bedroom home with rooftop terrace and swimming pool. The design conc... More

Goose Hut Home Bistro

We try to create the pure and simple beauty of "Wabi sabi" with contemporary materials.   Goose Hut is a Bistro located in Xidan Joy City, a commercial street in Xicheng District, Beijing. Over the years, whenever people in Beijing hear about Goose Hut, they always feel warmth and sincerity in their hearts. The hard working young people of different prats of Beijing, imagine Yan She as their “home.” As the fifth branch in Beijing, our original intention of the design is not to change anything. We want to keep the brand's warm atmopshere, and we just want to provide people who yearn for beauty to do nothing and let the heart rest and relax.   The entire space layout is a rectangular staggered site with a floor heigh... UNC Virtual Campus

The UNC Virtual Campus building arose from the premise of creating a new educational reference for the University Community in commemoration of the centenary of its University Reform. It is destined to become a contemporary educational and cultural support whose aim is to offer and develop educational programmes in a virtual communication environment.   Since its urban implantation, it is a singular object in the entrance of the UNC Campus. The volume emerges above the existing vegetation, standing out in the landscape, without interrupting the continuity of the park. The ground floor is free, permeable to the landscape and recreational activities, generating a flexible and appropriate social interaction area. The proposed ramp offer... More

iFree Cinema Chongqing

Housed within a retail complex at the heart of Chongqing’s shopping district, iFree is the new brand of Dadi Cinemas. CLOU’s response is a playful one, celebrating the history of filmmaking as well as satisfying people’s anticipation of visiting movie theatres. The interiors draw reference from classic movie theatres in history and the stop motion frames of early cinematography. With its clean lines, robust fair-faced concrete and metal mesh ceilings, the use of red velvet, and the larger-than-life suspended lamp cones, the cinema reminds one of the grand theatres remodelled with a young and urban take. A contemporary and thoughtful demonstration of iFree’s new brand identity is also designed by CLOU. More

Constellation of Enclosures - Jview Store

Situated within Columbia Circle, the recently completed OMA-designed commercial development in Shanghai, Neri&Hu has created a flagship store for Jview, a new multi-brand retailer. Specializing in garments and accessories made from the highest quality silks, wools, cottons and linens, the interior design for the shop is an homage to these natural textiles, their material authenticity, visceral tactility, and textural richness.   For the façade and entry, the strategy was to enhance the architectural elements already in existence with additional subtle layers. To balance the coldness of the steel structure and metal mesh canopy above, a wooden deck is added to the ground for hint of warmth, as well as to give a stronger str... More

Energy Plant Leeds

Located in a currently neglected part of Leeds on the cusp of regeneration, this District Energy Plant is intended to provide heating, cooling and power to existing and potential developments in the surrounding urban area. By combining power generation and services provision, and utilising bio-fuels, the Energy Plant will provide significant carbon reduction to its users and thus facilitate the future sustainable development of this part of the city.   The architecture of the building seeks to respond to its role and to its particular urban context, whilst meeting the complicated technical requirements and constraints of an industrial building. Apartments on Ave. Maréchal Fayolle

The project is situated in the 16th district, with typical dense, Haussmann designed, urban fabric on one side, and the “Bois de Boulogne” on the other. The project unfolds in between fluidly connecting urbanism and landscape.   The project is composed of 4 volumes, each 5 stories and is raised on pilotis, establishing complete transparency across the whole site at ground level. Freeform volumes create an atypical building with continuous façade and shifting depth. The interstitial spaces between the volumes creates a variety of patios and a break in the continuity of the street. A soft undulating landscape separates private and public activities at ground floor.   Each volume is different, providing diverse... More

Réel Contemporary Fashion

In a second project for Réel in Shanghai, a high-end shopping mall located on West Nanjing Road, Kokaistudios was commissioned to renovate and upgrade its third floor contemporary womenswear department. On identifying visibility and layout as particular challenges of the 500sqm space, designers injected layers and partitions into the formerly messy shop floor to create rhythm and pace, and invite discovery. Combining a solid core, mineral-inspired PVC, as well as brushed stainless steel finishes, all realized in neutral tones to best showcase the products themselves, the result fits seamlessly within the mall’s wider context, creating continuity and refinement.   Visibility was a key challenge: with sole access to the fl... Kimpton Da An Hotel

Located in the pristine Da’an district of Taipei, the concept for the hotel design was to create an interior sanctuary – an urban retreat that offers a sense of calm and respite from the city’s bustling streets and alleys, without losing the vibrancy and richness of its unique urban context.   Every aspect of the hotel reflects the guiding concept of the “inner sanctuary”. Guests begin their journey on the ground floor by entering the lobby, greeted by an intimately scaled reception lounge. The key element of the ground floor lobby design was to insert a carved mass, letting natural light inside for a play with light and shadow. The sculpted high/low ceiling offers different spatial experiences – a... More
