Our initial intention for the project was in fact to problematize the connection amongst form, space, and structure. The project came to our studio after a year of being on hold due to the client’s dissatisfaction.The skeleton and barrier walls of the structure were thoroughly constructed. There was a central, octagonal void surrounded by columns, which was exactly what had made the client unhappy—due to its shape and size, this void could not exhibit the wide, bright interior he desired. We realized the only way to revive the project was to take this problem as an opportunity rather than an obstacle to progress. Magazine London, a major new event space for the capital, has opened on the North Greenwich Peninsula. Designed by award-winning architects and cultural sector specialists Nissen Richards Studio, the building is an 8m-high, monolithic, L-shaped black box and a striking new neighbour for the O2’s white canopied structure to its right. As part of a longstanding involvement in all sectors of New York City housing, RKTB took on the task of developing an affordable infill prototype in collaboration with Community Preservation Corporation Resources (CPCR). The prototype addresses the urgent need for affordable housing in working class neighborhoods by repurposing numerous vacant sites throughout the city. Damesalen resulted from the need for new testing laboratories. The concept for the building was to replace the roof of a former university gymnastics hall with a new floor that would accommodate the various functions of the program. The project offered th e opportunity to explore an architectural concept where the additional floor was enclosed in a simple elegant glass box. Architectural and functional variations occur in the glass façade depending on the program and functions of the spaces behind.
