Vancouver Art Gallery - Grand Hotel

The Vancouver Art Gallery has just launched a major exhibition, Grand Hotel: Redesigning Modern Life, and molo’s cloud softlight mobiles are hanging prominently in the main atrium of the gallery.Commissioned by the VAG, the gallery says “[Grand Hotel] charts the evolution of the hotel from its humble origins as an isolate and utilitarian structure to a cultural phenomenon that figures prominently within the global landscape… The title of the exhibition acknowledges the formative image produced in the influential 1932 Hollywood film Grand Hotel where the lives of individuals interweave during a brief hotel stay yet remain, to some degree, compartmentalized. The film depicted a thoroughly modern condition and demonstrated the potency of the h... More

nMAC | ACCA - Buenos Aires International Ideas Competition

Museums represent our greatest cultural and social aspirations in their mission to collect and disseminate ideas while also striving for symbolic status within global cultural and national / local, shared aspirations. A Museum of Contemporary Art has a particularly elevated status within this shared cultural milieu, because it embodies our aspirations to shape and evolve culture. It collects and defines the edges of our cultural production and at it’s best, reflects the current and future states of our collective evolution. Within our current global financial crisis and shifting understanding of our shared responsibility to the environment, the museum design must develop strategies that situate it within this context. We understand... More

Cristobal Balenciaga Museum

Our involvement with this project came about through winning the open Public Competition for the interior design of the Museo Cristóbal Balenciaga in Guetaria. The scope of the job is in fact significantly broader than previousy announced; it not only involves fitting out a new and finished building, but also involves solving the closures, finishes, interiors and facades which weren’t resolved during the previous architectural stage. The project planning of the interior design needs to resolve a series of issues normally handled at the architectural planning stage. This means we contribute significantly and incisively to the overall surroundings and image, aiming for the building to gain cohesion and visual unity. One of the most stimula... More

Derfner Judaica Museum

The design for the recently completed 5,000 square foot Derfner Judaica Museum located within the Jacob Reingold Pavilion at the Hebrew Home for the Aged in Riverdale, New York establishes an inclusive prototype for the design of cultural institutions in the era of the aging, urbane, baby-boom generation. It is a forward-thinking yet humane environment comprised of accessible spaces that are architecturally comfortable, curatorially comprehensible and technologically equipped to meet the needs of both the current and future elderly. The museum is an ideal model for how to design cultural institutions that complement the sophisticated sensibilities of the baby boomers who will choose to defy their chronological age.  The urbanity of the Derf... THE OPOLE MUSEUM OF RURAL ARCHITECTURE

The Opole Museum of Rural Architecture is the only open-air museum located in the Opole Voivodeship, and only one of four such museums located within the historical boundaries of Silesia. During its almost 50 years of existence the Museum has amassed a rich collection of historic wooden architecture from the Opole Silesia region. The new administrative and reception building was erected in 2007. The building is characterized by a modern and simple design. To illuminate rooms located in the loft, 29 FAKRO roof windows and access roof light were mounted. Windows were installed in horizontal and vertical combinations. INSPIRATION: The mining museum is inspired by sedimentology. Slices of stone and different angles make this project unique. The surrounding remains after rocks should be used in the concreting. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design of the building is partly under the ground. Parts of the building-body rise above it to create an illusjon of mountains with a valley. These are moved to the opposite sides to create a bigger opening unto the surrounding mountains. This will also allow more light to reach into the building. There is a view through the building, and 3 levels inside. The windowsurfaces open to the sky in a different way because of the direction they are in. This is a result of where the two builing structures are... More

Occupation museum

The Museum of Occupations was the first custom-built museum in newly independent Estonia, the design being chosen at a competition with 50 submissions. The aim of the institution was to provide adequate information on occupations of the recent past, build a memorial to the deceased and enable organizing of small-scale seminars. The museum is located in the belt of bastions surrounding the Old Town. The building is pretty small-scale, structured as an uninterrupted movement through different interior spaces. The museum, the city and the park are integrated into a continuous yet changing experience, suitable for the institution‘s goal of being contemporary and constantly in flux. A small front yard (memorial) with birches serves as an... More

MUSEUM OF CYCLADIC ART

STRATEGY The project is to reinforce the Museum of Cycladic Art (MCA) public image, enhance its urban presence and degree of public interaction. The museum is situated in the very center of Athens, where public open space is scare and the building density is high. The museum’s existing façade is reminiscent of museum typologies’ facades of the international style, encased within the tight urban fabric. The larger portion of the facade area is covered with reflective glass panels which on their inner side are covered with rigid panels to prevent sun to reach the exhibition rooms where steady conditions of lighting are required. The function of the windows becomes secondary. We wanted the site and the museum to realize its potential. We... More

National Heritage Museum

The National Heritage Museum is an open air museum, founded at the beginning of the twentieth century to preserve memories of rural culture and traditional crafts in Holland. In niches in the wooded countryside outside Arnhem, completely furnished farmhouses, shops and workshops from different parts of the country have been brought together. A visit is certainly educational, but today it has to be an attraction as well. To achieve this broader concept a new exhibition building was needed to display the splendid collection, making the museum less dependent on fair weather. With this in mind, Mecanoo has viewed its task as twofold – to provide practical facilities, while also appealing to the public’s imagination. More

CHOPIN MUZEUM

The Chopin Muzeum is the result of an international competition. Held under the patronage of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, the Migliore+Servetto Studio won the permanent exhibition project in 2008, amongst 32 international firms. The project is developed like an “open museum” made of different theme paths the visitors may choose to follow. The need to exhibit with clarity and immediacy different thematic areas determined the development of different exhibition structures which comprise a system of emotional landscapes and soundscapes capable of capturing the attention and curiosity of the visitors by stimulating all their senses. The museum talks in 8 different languages at 5 different levels (adults, kids, young people... More
