THE LATTICE: ZHISHAN RESIDENCES

The city is redundant: it repeats itself so that something will stick in the mind.  Memory is redundant: it repeats signs so that the city can begin to exist. -Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities Studio Millspace Taipei is a modern metropolis that manages to maintain a sense of community and human scale; alongside new glassy tall buildings, there co-exists charming arcaded low rises from the 70s, while the sub-tropical climate allows for a lush greenery to thrive and interweave throughout the urban landscape. The project site is located in Zhishan, part of Tianmu in Shilin district, which has a particularly rich cultural background. It was a gateway for foreign cultures, and still today, it is the neighborhood where most internatio... More

The Art of Absence: Neri&Hu Reveals Its Latest Café Design

For a space in a historic 1912 brick building that now forms part of Shanghai’s Columbia Circle, a former industrial park renovated into a vibrant mixed-used hub by OMA, Blue Bottle engaged Neri&Hu to design a café that would exemplify their brand value of community culture, inviting people to connect and exchange over coffee. Neri&Hu Impactful absence is one of the design concepts often explored by acclaimed interdisciplinary firm Neri&Hu. For this cafe, the design started with a sketch of a domestic structure. Neri&Hu’s Sanya Wellness Retreat is inspired by an ancient Chinese walled city

Sanya Wellness Retreat is located in Haitang Bay on Hainan Island, a popular Chinese resort destination in the South China Sea. Designed by Shanghai-based Neri&Hu Design and Research Office, the wellness retreat is inspired by the majesty of an ancient Chinese walled city — raised on a plinth, wooden pavilions were usually surrounded by water for protection. Neri&Hu’s design is thus defined by two parts: a large wooden dwelling that contains guest rooms on top of a masonry base that consists of various public spaces and amenities.
