Carr’s sustainable Bruce Street building is a catalyst for urban renewal

In Melbourne’s inner-city suburb of Kensington, a new red brick and concrete building pays tribute to the area’s historic and industrial past. Designed by Melbourne-based architecture and interior design studio Carr, the eight-story “Bruce Street” building is uniquely placed to be a catalyst in the area’s urban renewal. The first development of scale in Kensington, Bruce Street is also the first project to pass Melbourne City Council’s Green Factor Tool (Carr explains this initiative will “impose a positive obligation on landscape designers, architects, planners, and developers to improve the extent of vegetation cover on private land in Melbourne.”) Rory Gardiner Rory Gardiner... Mount Sharp Residence

After years of weekend visits and time spent getting to intimately know their site, the clients’ main charge was to realize a house which would allow them to use and enjoy the land to its fullest. Located in the rolling landscape of Wimberley, Texas, it was only natural to take advantage of the miniature plateaus contained within the 22-acre lot. These “land shelves” span across the site in the east-west direction making them an ideal platform for a house which takes advantage of both solar and wind orientation. Detail: A balanced carbon-based design for The Arbor House

The Arbor House is a contemporary family home located to the west of the Scottish city of Aberdeen. Built in a conservation area, it was designed by Aberdeenshire-based architectural studio Brown & Brown. The two-story residence is constructed primarily of a timber frame and finished with a mix of board-marked concrete, larch cladding, and stone walls retained from the existing site. Jim Stephenson Jim Stephenson The meticulous design of The Arbor House is evocative of Californian modernism: A contemporary, cantilevered home, it is situated in harmony with the surrounding landscape, and blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. Moreover, its design places a strong emphasis on craftsmanship and carefully... More

Sustainable House in national park

The project involved the full renovation of a 230m² family home in Girona. Being one of a select few houses built in the nature reserve in the 1970s, the house was protected and the volume could not be increased but the facade and interior distribution could be adjusted. ©Pol Viladoms The challenge was in turning a very ugly facade into something beautiful and breaking open the traditional maze of interior rooms and passages into an open plan airy set of spaces with an inside-outside flow and a celebration of the spectacular views over the surrounding forests. ©Pol Viladoms Despite its tight size, we were able to fit 3 spacious bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 2 separate kitchen-living-dining spaces, a machine and storage r... Crunchyroll Dallas Offices

When opening new offices, companies  are now faced with redefining  the purpose of those offices, and are having a hard time doing so. Many companies continue to design generic offices derived from modern but safe design choices that ultimately mean nothing to their employees. Others entice new hires with meaningless perks and one-off “immersive” rooms and installations. We believe that in a post-covid world, the correct approach is more nuanced than either of these strategies. The Crunchyroll Dallas office project embodies the idea that a company’s cultural identity should go far beyond the functional necessities of desks, meeting rooms, lighting and acoustics, simple color schemes, and logos on walls. House Moss - Norway

This family in Moss wanted to carry out energy-saving measures in their house. They reinsulated the roof and walls. As a crowning achievement, they installed SunStyle solar roof tiles on both the house and garage. The garage roofs have an east/west orientation, which provides good electricity production in the morning and afternoon. Houses face north/south where the south-facing surface has active panels that provide plenty of electricity during the day. The facility provides good production throughout the day. In addition, the roof of the garage and house has a high roof angle. This results in good production on sunny days in autumn and winter. On the north side of the house, they installed dummy panels that do not produce electricity, but... More
