Darien Leed Renovation

Designed for a couple with a young family who wanted to make the most of this small house, we created plenty of open floor space and lots of natural light while also making the house energy efficient. We accomplished that by placing floor-to-ceiling windows where possible and even exploring smaller stair spaces with triangular units. Working within the existing envelope, including existing siding that had to remain, we insulated the house from the inside with open-cell foam in wall cavities and a combination of closed-cell foam and mineral wool along basement walls. The final result is a well-performing, energy-efficient house that feels a lot bigger, brighter, and happier without breaking the bank. Ongoing project of ours with a 1000 square foot of floor area in the prime location with great access, had finished with the first floor roof slab and while discussing with the client, he referred us to rent the space in second floor. Before starting the second floor, we were sure about the space needs to be light at the day times and ventilated. Total space requirement was multiple workstation, a small discussion room, conference room, a small pantry to stay ourself active during the night outs. The floor plate was 20 feet by width and 60 feet by length in west and eas... More

Farmville Residence

The Farmville at Surat, Gujarat is designed with an idea of transforming the farmhouse into a place where the younger generations could feel connected with culture and recreate the feel of places that the older generation had grown up in. An experience rather than just a place to stay is created with modernistic materials and geometric triangular shapes, which has been used in a diverse way symbolizing strong cultural roots. A meandering pathway leads to the majestic farmhouse through the cool shade of trees planted on either side. A solid wooden door with a bit brass inlay greets at the entrance and invites into the beautiful house. The central pathway in the foyer open to the courtyards on either side of it, where both the courtyards are... More

Bamboo Sports Hall

Chiangmai Life Architect’s Bamboo Sports Hall for Panyaden International School combines modern organic design, 21st century engineering and complete environmental sustainability through the use of bamboo.  The design was based on the lotus flower which embodies the Buddhist teachings that are at the heart of the School’s vision. The brief was to build a hall that should be big enough to hold the projected capacity of 300 students, but still smoothly integrates with the previous earthen and bamboo buildings of the school as well as the natural hilly landscape of the area. It should provide modern sports facilities and use only bamboo to maintain the low carbon footprint and the “Green School” mission of Panyaden. The hall covers an are... More

Ho Yamal! Emirati Eco-Friendly Cafe Container Design

Container construction has been taking the design world by storm, and Ho Yamal! – a respectable eatery in the UAE, Dubai – has hopped on the bandwagon! Since container construction is still in the mythological stages in the UAE, the location of this eatery is incredibly unique. The CAS design team balanced out the schematics by seamlessly combining the indigenous aspects of the Emirates culture with sophisticated elements of green design to make this project a success. To ameliorate the rough climatic conditions, solar panels became an inherent part of the design. A turquoise color scheme embraced the coastal nature of the location, and a parametric wooden structure artfully embraces the organic side of the design. This project turned out o... More

Mesa Água

Domingos Tótora's mesa água is the picture of a lazy brook. The glass top evokes sunlight sparkling on water washing over pebbles smoothed from years of a natural polishing process. The sight of it carries one away to a quiet afternoon of rest. Each stone is a solid piece, molded from layers of cardboard pulp and paste, akin to the process of sediment settling into a riverbed. There may be no artist who demonstrates sustainability as wholly as Domingos. His masterworks have journeyed full circle, narrating the story of sustainable earth without uttering a single word.
