Studio Nic Roex is a furniture, product and interior design studio. Studio Nic Roex’ work is characterised by sharp construction and strong lines, combined with familiar shapes, elements and techniques. By exposing these processes, Studio Nic Roex aims to actively involve the viewer in his designs.
Nic Roex (designer):
‘Immediate acceptance of the presented material is not the purpose of my work. My designs confront the viewer with familiar and established processes, elements, shapes and techniques, in a transparent manner. This unexpected approach to their combination and application elicits curiosity and interaction. In my designs, I try to actively draw the observer into the object. I want to increase people’s awareness of what they see, heightening their ability (and desire) to understand it. This auto-narrative quality manifests itself in my work in various ways.’
Nic Roex was born in Eindhoven in 1981, and graduated in Furniture Design at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK), The Hague in 2009. During his degree he did an internship at designer Piet Hein Eek. Following the presentation of his final-year collection at the Salone del Mobile in Milan and the KABK graduation exhibition in 2009, Nic Roex founded Studio Nic Roex in 2010, based in Klaprozenweg, Amsterdam.
