Beneath a series of floating canopies on the waterfront, the architects explain that the three main programs together and their surrounding public spaces sit in harming with the natural surroundings and are infused with elements that capture the humble spirit of Southern Guangdong alongside Nanhai's traditional culture. "The local culture of Southern Guangdong is always about the gathering of people. To keep the same lifestyle, it has to be contributed by the contemporary cultural venues. The design of the Nanhai Art Center wants to provide the maximum grey spaces for such activities. It is also inspired by the large eaves of the traditional architecture of Lingnan (ancient broader Guangdong area)," Ma Yansong of MAD Architects explains.

The design is structured around a visual axis directed towards the lake, with the programs located on either side of this axis. The Grand Theater and the Museum, which comprise a total of 89,269 square meters, are situated on one side of the central axis. Included in this area is a 1,500-seat amphitheater and a 600-seat multi-purpose hall. The Sports Center is located on the other side of the axis and contains swimming pools, basketball courts, badminton courts, and associated sports facilities within a 32,006 square meter area.

A 7-meter-high elevated landscape platform on the second floor connects the three main programs and takes a multifaceted approach to the site's connectivity. At ground level, parking and commercial logistics are accommodated, while the main commercial spaces are located to radiate outward towards the waterfront and the public. The expansive public realm on the second level leads visitors directly to the main entrances of the Grand Museum and Sports Center.

Enforcing the connection between the Center and the urban realm beyond, the permeable facades allow nature to flow through the site back to the city, while the translucent white ETFE membrane structure roof floats in an ethereal manner above.

From the start, sustainability and green carbon reduction are fully integrated into the design concept and form a narrative of building technology and innovation. The Nanhai Arts Center incorporates energy-saving and environmentally friendly technologies, including photovoltaic power generation, rainwater collection, and vertical greening systems.
