All about Primers

Primers have several advantages when used as a preliminary layer of coating before applying final coats of paint. Optimal adhesion of paint is what primers ensure, along with consistent or uniform finish. It is wrong to assume that primers add to building cost as their functional as well as aesthetic benefits are highly laudable.

Highly functional, primers enhance the durability of paint at a relatively insignificant cost. Primers are also highly recommended as a preliminary coating solution due to their ability to block smoke, stains, grease, water and tannins that may bleed through topcoat. Moreover, primers impart added safety to the surface being painted.

In addition to offering excellent functional advantages, primers improve the appearance of a finish. A uniform finish provides a smooth surface, attractive sheen level and a more consistent overall look.

Primers are available in different types including shellac, latex and oil. A broader classification of primers can be done on the basis of application and utility. Among the most common types are bonding, tintable, acrylic, PVA, alkyd, BIN andhigh build, as well as and paint and primer in one. Each type has its own unique features and benefits.

Unfinished surfaces including metal, wood, concrete and drywalls need to be primed prior to painting. When paint is applied to unprimed surfaces, issues such as peeling and cracking invite unwanted expenses.

Surface preparation is a vital aspect when it comes to applying primer. A dry and clean surface ensures better adhesion of paint. Primer effect can be enhanced when a surface is smoothed using a sandpaper and dust eliminated with a damp cloth. Paint should be applied only after the primer has dried to enhance the overall look.

One of the remarkable aspects of primer is that it reduces suction from the top paint coat into the substrate. Without primer, topcoat paint soaks into substrate and reduces the thickness of the visible paint. As the total film build or thickness of paint increases, finish becomes more aesthetically pleasing. Crack bridging ability also increases with higher thickness to eliminate inconsistencies and make the substrate smooth.

Different situations and surfaces demand the application of a different primer. Water damage and stains can be effectively covered with the help of an alkyd primer. For covering patches on a surface, PVA primer is a good option. Faster drying is linked with BIN primer. The best primer for drywall is acrylic and for wood, an oil-based pr latex primer is an excellent choice.

The above benefits clearly explain why it is highly important to apply primer before applying paint. Primer enhances the longevity of paint and makes a surface more aesthetically pleasing and with a smooth and consistent finish as desired..
