Known nationally and globally for innovative architecture, integrated design firm JZA+D recently brought its unique adaptive reuse approach to Queens, New York, where the design team transformed a mixed-use property into the new meeting hall for Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1056. The conversion of the former contractor’s office and residence is bringing renewed attention to the potential for transforming vacant buildings into vibrant new commercial properties. The project received a 2019 Building Award from the Queens Chamber of Commerce, in recognition of the attractive and innovative design and its positive impact on the neighborhood.
The challenge for the architects was to reinvent the interior of this narrow brick building (just 20 feet wide) to for meeting and conference program areas as well as staff offices and amenities. The design moved the stairs from the interior to the street side, making the floor plates effectively wider and increasing the property’s utility. JZA+D also reimagined the facade with crisp blue metal panels — referencing the color of the union logo — and two-story-high glazing that exposes the stair and the spaces beyond, reinforcing the connection to the community and bringing natural daylight inside.
