The owners are an incredible couple I their 40s with big jobs and massive travel wanderlust, and 3 Cairn Terriers. They moved to the home in 2015 from a 2-bedroom condo in Austin to split the difference commuting to work and to move into a place that would allow their life to evolve as they do.
The home is approximately 4200 square feet, 4 bedrooms, an office with a very open plan, wandering layout, massive mitered glass windows facing the back of the property and soaring ceilings. The house truly is a one story home in the way it lives for them, with the exception of one end that contains a open landing area and two additional bedrooms upstairs with a jack-and-jill bathroom. The main level has a master suite with a massive master bathroom, an office, an additional guest/mil/nanny bedroom with an ensuite bath, an open plan living and dining area and an eat-in kitchen-great room. There is also a butler’s pantry, a utility room and two ½ bathrooms on this floor.
Kristie is a high-powered tech PR executive but underneath is truly a hippie and John is a surgeon, originally from Chicago who has embraced Texas full-on after moving there 20 some years ago. We kept the space a soft warm white throughout and let all of the things they have collected along the way dictate the color palette. Travel to rural places in the US, Mexico and Africa really inspired the space to lean toward warm but natural tones for the accents. Mixing metals and textures, modern and vintage, hand crafted and machine made, investment and budget pieces.
My main source of inspiration in any project is the soundtrack for the space - Kristie and John have a love for classic country and soulful southern vibes. Think Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson, but add a little 70s Stevie Nicks and a bit of hippie yoga zen and I started there.
