In 2006, Colombian-born Ana Maria Calderón Kayser established the ames company in the German Eifel region. The idea was to develop furniture and interior accessories that would appeal to the hearts and minds of cosmopolitans. The coming together of Icelandicdreamscapes and Colombian joie de vivre results in furniture for modern and unconventional interior concepts that combine clear forms with organic shapes while being multifunctional and flexible in use.
A culture of diversity for furniture with added value
The ames collection comprises contemporary furniture that affords multifunctional use, both indoors and outdoors, for private interiors and for the contract market. Consisting of occasional furniture, chairs, bar stools and tables, the product families meet a variety of individual living requirements, thanks to the many different designs available. Different materials with their many combination options and a broad spectrum of colours, upholstery textiles and frames allow for almost endless design options. Intelligently conceived designs, such as the tonic storage unit by Reinhard Dienes Díaz, offer unparalleled freedom in use: in an instant, tonic can be easily changed from a sideboard to a bookshelf; combined with an additional clothes rail it makes for a perfect coatrack or a convenient piece of bathroom furniture.
Designs emerging from an interplay of different cultures
Ames products are created from an interplay of the most varied cultural influences. Since moving to Germany in 2001, the everyday life of Columbian-born CEO and art director Ana Maria CalderónKayser has been shaped by two cultures and she also works together with Icelandic designer ErlaSólveig Oskarsdóttir. The Reykjavik-based designer, who works at an international level, is responsible for the majority of products in the current ames collection. Her designs amalgamate the seemingly contrary cultures of Colombia and Iceland into a formal unity: clear geometric forms combine with organic shapes, mirroring both South American joie de vivre and cool Scandinavian functionality. In addition to Oskarsdóttir, the designer Reinhard Dienes Díaz, who was also born in Colombia and lives in Germany, and the architect Jorge Lizarazo, who, among other things, creates textiles and carpets, also work with ames.
