It is valuable at every step. The insect is not lowly compared to the human. It’s just all part of the web of life. So there is no such thing as a waste. No human who’s a waste. No tree that’s a waste. No piece of toilet paper. Upcycling eliminates the concept of waste. (McDonough, 2013) Caption Upcycling, also known as creative reuse, is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value. Upcycling is the opposite of downcycling, which is the other half of the recycling process. So what is the difference between upcycling and recycling? Recycling is when you convert (waste) into reusable material.... Más

The point of departure for the project has been to promote a vibrant urban environment in central Enköping, transforming the Bagaren city block, referred to as Paushuset, into an open and inviting meeting place with low thresholds. The aim is to intensify the central public flows and to reinforce the position of Stora Torget as an important place for the entire town. Caption History and urban fabricEnköping was originally established as a market town. During the Viking Age, shoreline of the Mälaren lake was further inland, and there was an important port where Stora Torget lies today. The clearly defined grid structure of the urban fabric gives the inner town its character, with remnants of older timber townhouses. The... Más

An Schoenmaekers completes an extensive renovation of two terraced houses and a textile factory in the center of Sint-Niklaas

The owners of a dilapidated plot in the center of Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, saw it as an opportunity to breathe new life into an undervalued place with a rich history. The plot holds two row houses and a textile factory at the back, a reminder of the textile industry that used to define Sint-Niklaas. Johnny Umans An Schoenmaekers designed an extensive renovation of the two terraced houses and the textile factory that uses the existing elements as much as possible and transforms it into a modern, close to energy-neutral, home. Existing parts were intentionally left raw and new additions are clearly defined as new. Johnny Umans The layout was opened up and simplified into clear open interiors with a strong visual connection to each o... Más

St. Minas House renovation realizes the potential of its connection to the sea

Located near the small village of St Minas, Greece, and overlooking the Euboea Sea, this summer house renovation by Neiheiser Argyros opens up to the landscape in all directions. In particular, two large shallow concrete arches orient the main living spaces towards the sea.  Lorenzo Zandri From the approach road, the house appears to disappear into olive groves and wild pines forests but opens up across two stories to embrace the full extent of the seafront views. Extensive terraces around the house create a multi-level network of outdoor living rooms. Lorenzo Zandri The original house on the site was designed by Greek architect Nikos Hadjimichalis in the 1970s. While the original house was also focused towards the sea, by... Más

The primary ambition for this project is the creation of centralised living space, reminiscent of the client’s childhood home, with a boundary defined at the site edge, minimising the introduction of any further sense of enclosure.A linked ambition is that of authenticity in dialogue with the site, a notion of building with something found, expressed through the solidity and permanence of concrete platforms and hollows, and a fireplace. Caption Our philosophy was to address client needs while meeting all constraints imposed by a conservation area context. Central to this approach was a decision to limit visibility of the addition from the street, maintaining the prominence of the bungalow facade. Caption... Más

E21 Multicommunication Agency

The project for the new headquarters of the Multicommunica- tion Agency e21, presents a particularity: our close relationship with the client needs program, since we had already designed the previous headquarters and developed a long study of flows and the organization chart, that in the year of 2011, which facilitated and greatly expedited the design process. Known for being a company that seeks every day to make the brand of its customers more relevant, it was very important that this should also be expressed in the identity of the architectural project. @MarceloDonadussi The request centered around the need for a flexible and stimulating space, encompassing more meeting rooms, a differentiated meeting room (called a strategy room)... An Indian Retreat

This build focused on the use of brick and expanding the space for the family. The entire house was re-modelled whilst maintaining original details like the front door, hallway floor, main bannister rail, and the original fireplaces.  Caption A rear dormer extension is visible on the top floor with the addition of a new bedroom and bathroom. In blending the extension seamlessly into the house, the architect decided to add integrated windows, facing onto the garden. The windows slope with the roofline and continue from the hallway into the bedroom, creating a wall of light in the dormer extension.  Caption Throughout the house, there are Indian family heirloom elements that are mainly located in the reception, enhancing... APARTMENTS DESIGNED FOR FAMILIES IN THE HEART OF STOKE NEWINGTON. THIS RARE NEW-BUILD WILL OFFER LOCAL RESIDENTS GENEROUS SPACE, FLEXIBLE LAYOUTS AND A LARGE COMMUNAL GARDEN, DESIGNED WITH CHILDREN IN MIND. Caption This development of 15 apartments is one of very few new-build housing schemes to be approved in Stoke Newington. This part of Hackney is densely packed with rows of two- to three-bedroom Victorian terraces, so a site that would accommodate a five-storey building was an extremely rare find. Caption Caption This particular site was at the conjunction of a very deep plot and a 1950s block of flats, and planning consent had already been secured when the project came to HWO. Upon reviewing the plans, we decided they... Más

Caudale Camden

We have been working with the London Borough of Camden and residents of the Regent's Park Estate to create high quality new homes for those families who are due to lose their current homes as a result of the High Speed 2 development. "If all new council housing was designed to these standards, we’d be living in the New Jerusalem." reports Hugh Pearman, Editor of the RIBAJ. Tim Crocker Caudale comprises 8 dwellings, 3 townhouses and 5 apartments, alongside a new public garden. Caudale takes its cue from the surrounding 1950s estate once described as “the ideal site for the careful planning of a great sweep of working-class flats, catering for the main bulk and backbone of our people” by Eric Cook in 1944 —then... Blackfriars Circus

Our group of new buildings lines the south-eastern end of Blackfriars Road and fronts St. George’s Circus, an important hub from which boulevards connect to the 18th century river crossings at Lambeth, Westminster, Waterloo, Blackfriars and Southwark. The buildings act to repair the historic form of the circus and introduce a new landmark. A 28-storey masonry tower emerges from the block, set politely one building back so as not to dominate, its slender façade is turned to address the obelisk at the focal point of the circus giving it its hexagonal form. David Grandorge   Set behind the boulevard frontage, a number of more intimate public spaces are created.  A square with café, seating, trees and fount... Más

Conceptually the project is an intermediary between house and garden; binding qualities of both whilst creating a rich variety of domestic experiences that utilise the entire site. Tom Ferguson The design introduces a series of gently rising brick platforms to the rear of an existing brick bungalow. Varying spatial proportions and atmospheres emerge from the platforms; the horizontal living room, vertical stair tower and elevated master bedroom. Each of these spaces are robustly enclosed by brick walls and together form a compact cluster of earth like volumes that interlock inside and out. Tom Ferguson The living room forms the widest of spaces and is delicately framed by structure that surrounds the stair tower. From the garden... Más
