Park at the Warsaw Uprising Mound

The Warsaw Uprising Mound Park is the Fourth Nature refuge created on an anthropogenic hill. For years, this site served as a repository for the debris from Warsaw after the city was destroyed in World War II, gradually giving rise to an artificial hill that now stands 35 metres above the surrounding flat and marshy landscape. After the landfill was closed in the mid-1960s, the hill became overgrown with vegetation that, over time, transformed into a ruderal "forest". Its adaptation into a public park involved recognising its ecological and symbolic potential and making various uses of the rubble found on site. The Mound area was thus reclaimed in three different ways: symbolically, physically and by the Fourth Nature: Michał Szlaga... Más

TerraTimber

TerraTimber introduces an innovative method for the digital upcycling of waste wood to create circular construction systems enabling the sustainable transformation of reclaimed materials into structural elements. DDF_dos_KIT This approach utilizes computational tools and Augmented Reality (AR) fabrication processes to manage the complexity of diverse, non-standard waste wood materials. Starting from the generation of digital inventories through image processing, the wood pieces are then computationally assembled into large structural elements, which are finally physically assembled with nails made of wood and with the aid of AR. Earth is integrated to form a hybrid material system, enabling the construction of sustainable floor slabs... Más

Vulcan Shingles

Wood products play a significant role in the circular economy.  The circular economy is an economic model that aims to minimise waste and maximise the use of resources. At Abodo we have created a product from defective, re-worked thermally modified FSC®-certified (Forest Stewardship Council) New Zealand Radiata Pine in the form of our Vulcan Shingles.     The journey begins by taking cladding and screening offcuts from the production process, transforming what would have been discarded material into a valuable resource. These offcuts are carefully trimmed to a uniform 450mm length, ensuring efficient utilisation and reducing unnecessary waste. To achieve the desired width, the short-length pieces undergo an edge-ripping... Más

MVRDV completes the dramatic transformation of a 1970s city block in Paris

In the Paris neighbourhood of Montparnasse, the now completed Gaîté Montparnasse by MVRDV is a complete transformation of a mixed-used block dating from 1974. The project retains and rationalizes previously existing uses such as a hotel, shopping centre, offices, and a library while densifying the construction with the addition of social housing and a kindergarten. And in addition to providing a more welcoming and accessible environment for pedestrians, the project also embraces the circular economy throughout, particularly with the retention of significant portions of the previous structure.  Ossip van Duivenbode The original design of “Îlot Vandamme” by Pierre Dufau was a landmark of its day. Taisugar Circular Village in Taiwan embraces the principles of circular construction and design

A key principle of the circular economy is that materials are reused and virtually no waste is created. The design of Taisugar Circular Village by Bio Architecture Formosana in Tainan, Taiwan takes this principle into account by analyzing the building construction and deconstruction plans upfront to minimize waste. The use of a modularized design with modular building components further ensured build efficiency. Studio Millspace The Circular Village development comprises three ‘Circular Blocks’ being the ‘C-House’, ‘E House’ and a ‘C-Farm.’ The C-House functions as the living room of the village, the E-House as the kitchen, and the C-Farm as a garden where food is produced.
