Oaxaca's Plúmula offers a workshop, meeting place, refuge, and home centered around a celebrated Flamboyán tree
In the City of Oaxaca, this project by Espacio 18 Arquitectura sees the transformation of a delipidated house and existing structure into a workshop, meeting place, refuge, and the home of a Flamboyán tree. The name of the project – Plúmula – refers to a plant's initial shoot or stem.

The homeowner, a plastic artist, requested that pre-existing adobe walls be retained. Alongside this, a light steel structure supports new leisure spaces, a ceramics workshop, and a bedroom. The steel structure reinforces the existing system and allows for tall sliding windows. The Flamboyán tree is always the protagonist in the design, with key views focused on it.

The sliding window is a unique horizontal opening solution. The structure is anodised 25 micron aluminum alloy, in a natural color finish. As an option, the thermolacquered or anodised versions are available in an infinite choice of colors. The roller bearing system is made from stainless steel specially adapted for projects near the sea. Fixed or sliding, the width of the vertical profile is 22 mm and is only limited by the maximum surface area of the glass. Button-locking is available with two-point locking and cylinder locking with key. Motorisation is also possible.

THE GRACEFUL HOUSE
It is “polite architecture” in the historic center of a medieval town, a major restructuring that takes a contemporary language, while continuing to communicate with the historic location.
The main facade is decorated with a backdrop and holding up the stairwell outside main entrance: a giant slab of marble structured and supported with stainless steel and carved with a decoration laser to get a good transparency.
The scale is purposely distanced from architecture thanks to steel spacers that hold the step in monolithic marble, accentuated by the lighting system that highlights also the perforations of the backdrop. A house presented Otto Walker Architects with dramatic views and a choice site. Using a mix of raw timbers and chunky, native stones, Otto developed a concept that responded to the client’s specific wishes.“The materials are intrinsic to the area, and it’s still a bit of an Alpine feel that just seems to make sense there,” says Otto. “The client wanted lots of views, and indoor/outdoor living was also a component.
