In Zapotengo, Oaxaca, Mexico, the design of La casa del Sapo by Espacio 18 Arquitectura takes a strongly contextual approach to its community and surroundings. In response to the place itself, the house is conceived as ‘two stones looking at the sea, craving for its timelessness.’

The first stone, or volume, looks for the sunrise while the other one looks for the sun to go down. The space between the two volumes is open to the beauty of the sea and features a flexible outdoor living space.

The simple materials used, primarily concrete with wood accents and louvres/screens, were chosen in line with local construction skills and material availability.

During the building process, many things were left entirely to the decision of local workers as a result of the pandemic.
