Angular house

Some architectural structures make loud statements. They declare. They command the attention of the onlookers. Situated in the Gujranwala town of Delhi, this home, designed by Architect Puneet Kumar and his team at Interactive Design Studio, is one such structure that stands out from its surroundings. This visceral instinct is reflected in the exteriors defined by angular forms, an architectural expression that speaks volumes. Amidst the colour and chaos of the bustling street, the Corian facade embraces greys and whites, breaking the monotony of the neighborhood.

“The brief demanded a mix of themes as the clients were a multi-generational family, and everyone had their specific needs and preferences,” says Architect Puneet. This challenging brief meant that the team had to take into account a diversity of personalities, and come up with a design solution that looked harmoniously contemporary. Therefore, each space is designed to be different from one another, imbuing each space with its own character and ensuring a dynamic journey through the house.

The planning is carried out by studying the volume of spaces. The 7000 sq.ft residence unfolds in a trifecta of spaces, each bearing its own distinct purpose and ambience. The guest areas, reserved for those specially invited into this realm of luxury, exude an air of opulence, swathed in shades of soothing beige. Here, materials like intricately engraved marble and gilded leaf accents dress up the surfaces, while three-dimensional stone textures add a layer of depth and visual intrigue.

Moving onward, we encounter the family areas that are designed to bring the multi-generational family together. The heart of this zone is the family lounge nestled on the first floor, brimming with youthful vibrance. Dark blue sofas punctuate the room, set against a backdrop of understated grey walls, creating a space that is both inviting and intimately familial. A quaint mandir, an emblem of spiritual solace, finds its place here, providing a sanctuary for moments of introspection and devotion.

Further ahead, the personal sanctuaries - the bedrooms and washrooms are tailored to the unique preferences, routines, and tastes of their occupants.  The visual expression of these private zones is ruled by eclecticism: from the choice of furnishings to the colour palette, every element is thoughtfully curated to align seamlessly with their individual personality. For instance, in the son's bedroom, classical moldings and stone-finished tiles impart an air of timeless sophistication. The integration of wooden louvres adds a touch of rustic elegance, creating a space that is steeped in tradition yet adorned with modern elements. On the contrary, the daughter's bedroom embodies a minimalist aesthetic, characterized by sleek black grooves set against pristine white walls and flooring. The pastel palette further invokes a sense of contemporary chic, resulting in a space where simplicity reigns supreme.

As one traverses through the common areas and the parents' bedroom, a soothing palette of neutrals sets the tone, creating an environment of understated elegance and timeless appeal. The kids' lounge boasts an angular wooden ceiling adorned with profile lighting, creating a dynamic and playful atmosphere. Ascending on to the terrace, the party lounge takes on a completely different character, embracing an industrial aesthetic with concrete walls providing a robust backdrop. Here, the wooden flooring introduces a sense of warmth while the open ceiling with its metal tree structure adds an artistic focal point. These impressive inclusions offer a distinct character to this home, besides connecting the theme created in each area.

Apart from all these elements that add personality to the residence, the design narrative is further distinguished by several standout features, showcasing innovative thinking and a keen understanding of functionality. A pivotal aspect lies in the strategic relocation of the main entrance to the upper floor, a departure from the conventional stilt floor layout.  It serves as a thoughtful deviation that prioritizes accessibility and convenience, aligning the design with the needs and preferences of the occupants.

The triple-height staircase is a marvel in itself, with its glass roof, acting as both a skylight and a source of natural illumination that illuminates every corner of the interiors in a soft, diffused glow. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also contributes to a sustainable and energy-efficient environment, minimizing the need for artificial lighting during daylight hours. The sustainability quotient is also emphasized by the perforated exteriors that act as natural ventilators, working in tandem with a strategically positioned toilet exhaust on the rear side. This ensures efficient airflow and ventilation throughout the building, promoting a healthy and comfortable living environment.

Thus, this multigenerational home is filled with myriad colors, patterns, textures, and innovative features— that  work with each other while also striking in their own right to create a characterful home for luxurious and efficient living.
