Art House

Art House is a family home for an art collector. The existing home was an uninspiring 1980’s addition to a Victorian villa. Our brief was to work within the original footprint to create a home to allow for large gatherings and space to display a growing art collection.

DESCRIBE THE INTERIOR DESIGN OF THE PROJECT
The project is a family home for an art collector. The existing home was an uninspiring 1980’s addition to a Victorian villa. Our brief was to work within the original footprint to create a home to allow for large gatherings and space to display a growing art collection. Our design approach, which is a thread running between all our projects, was to seek a balance between restraint and exuberance.

The restrained base palette of pale timber floors and warm white walls and ceilings creates a background to the Paul Bangay designed garden beyond and the client’s art collection. The joinery insertions create the top notes with moments of unexpected colour, some highly figured stone and intricate detailing, all balanced against the background palette. Furniture selections also range from neutral to exuberant, again in balance with the overall palette and artwork. Sustainability is addressed through an eye to longevity. Joinery is crafted from sustainable veneers, and the furniture is sourced from suppliers with high environmental credentials with pieces that will have long lifespans.

DESCRIBE HOW THIS PROJECT IS AN EXAMPLE OF EXCELLENT INTERIOR DESIGN
K.P.D.O. is committed to craft. Our creative director, Kerry Phelan, is a second generation designer, trained in her father’s joinery studio and workshop, and has a thorough understanding of detail. A commitment to detail imbues our projects with a subtlety and surprise. Our projects rely on two fundamentals, clarity of planning and intricacy of detail to create memorable spaces.

DESCRIBE THE TRULY INNOVATIVE ASPECTS OF THE DESIGN OF THIS PROJECT
Innovation takes many forms. The pressures of time and budget can strip aspiration from design. K.P.D.O. worked directly with the trades (mainly the joiner, hard plasterer and stonemason) to achieve a high quality finish using current commercially viable methods.
