Richter architectes et associés have completed the renovation and extension of two pavilions located on the site of the Hospices Civils de Strasbourg : ORL and BLUM. These two spaces are now home to the head offices of a medical technologies company, a restaurant, a nursery, and a third place.

The ORL pavilion is part of the urban heritage complex of the new Hôpital Civil de Strasbourg. Its characteristic pavilion architecture illustrates the main strength of lies of solids and voids, in a subtle and perfectly measured composition. The reconversion project provided the opportunity to restore the balance of solids and voids, by removing all the additions of the last several decades and by realising its extension through the replacement of the roofs.
With its highly ordered architecture and powerful spatiality, this building already met the needs of technical and functional flexibility (open spaces, individual and shared offices) of a service-focused programme. Thus, all the attention of this project was focused on the value enhancement of existing elements, by preserving and even reconstituting the pavilion’s structure.

The Blum pavilion was originally built as an annex of the buildings dedicated to healthcare and housed a lecture hall for classes in medicine. Henceforth, it offers flexible floors, whilst also serving as a third place, blending areas for food services, representation, and work.
Here, the extension has been made concrete through the transformation of the basement into a garden level. These works help to better anchor the building and its uses in the heart of the technology centre.
