With its architectural, urban, and functional qualities, the new logistics market, the Marché d'Intérêt National de Rezé (MiN), has become a prominent node located just south of the city of Nantes in western France. The architecture of the MiN is driven by a strong environmental ambition that aligns well with the sustainability goals of the Nantes Region. Hidden within a clearing in a Grade II listed arboretum in Hampshire, this highly efficient new-build family home was designed to fully embrace its wooded location. Surrounded by woods, the site provided both the potential for a unique perspective and also a challenge, due to the trees limiting the amount of natural daylight. To overcome this, we placed the guest bedrooms and ancillary spaces on the ground floor and elevated the primary living areas to the lighter first and second floors. Located on a hilltop in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, the site faces west towards the city offering a 180-degree harbour view that takes in the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. It is also exposed to the harsh westerly sun and winds. The challenge was to achieve the clients’ aspiration for a substantial home on a signature site, without obstructing harbour views for neighbours. The clients have adult children and young grandchildren and wanted a house of many modes. A contained house for them to live comfortably as a couple. A house that accommodates extended family stays and a house for entertaining, with an outside area large enough for 25 or more people. Studio Johnston were also commissioned to do the complete interior fit out - with all new furniture, soft furnishings and artwork designed for the home. A 1970s heritage-listed semi is re-engineered for contemporary family life. Keeping within the building foot-print, architect Conrad Johnston has carved extra space and forged stronger connections to landscape and place, while maintaining the integrity of the original structure and material language. To complement the entrance ensemble to the university, a flat, transparent timber construction was realized, which is oriented towards the campus and pond. Under the large “green roof”, the dining room and open spaces interlock to form an attractive recreational zone. The education campus sees itself as a holistic, integrative all-day educational facility for children aged 0-10 years. With 33 educational rooms. 6 of these educational rooms are organized in groups in so-called beavers (educational areas). Here, the youngest children (from 2 a-10 a) live together with the older ones. Established in 2015 by Parks Canada Agency (PCA), the Rouge National Urban Park (RNUP) is an ecologically protected zone that encompasses much of the Rouge River and Little Rouge Creek valleys. At 7,910 hectares, RNUP is the largest urban park in North America and Canada’s first “National Urban Park”. Our design draws from Unilever's iconic logo, embodying curved elements and lively hues reminiscent of their everyday products. We've also woven Cambodian cultural elements into the design to celebrate local heritage—from the inviting warmth of rattan and bamboo lights that showcase traditional craftsmanship to the reception counter inspired by intricate temple art.
