The Höghult house is a part of a large estate with several old buildings in the middle of the Swedish landscape with old farms, large fields and endless views over the green forest. The site is steep, with the building on the very top, overlooking the forest and an adjacent lake. The building consists of two equally sized volumes, one closed horizontal timber part and one open timber framing part. In the closed volume there is a sauna, shower and bedroom. Evolving a prior JCB residential project, Laneway Terrace is the result of the client acquiring a neighbouring property to expand their large family home. Derek Swalwell The existing dwelling on site was a dilapidated, brick terrace with a significant heritage listing. The client was committed to reinvigorating its history while creating a mix of indoor/outdoor entertaining and room for guests. The Wool Sauna building is the only sauna of its kind in Latvia and the latest addition to the Ziedlejas wellness resort. The stilted building sits on a hilltop at a distance from the resort's other saunas and overnight cabins but forms an intrinsic part of the experience. Guests access the Wool Sauna via a winding wooden walkway, which is more than a means to get from A to B. It all started with our clients’ purchase of a house over a hundred years old. The traditional building with a gable roof was at its end. Its stone basement was still in a good condition so we decided to take down the rest of the house and use the stone socle in the basement as a foundation for the new house. Our courageous and somewhat risky plan worked out and today, the clients live in a beautiful, modern house which combines the historical soul of its predecessor and nordic esthetics with a touch of industrial style.
