Modernist courtyard house in Vancouver by Leckie Studio Architecture + Design presents a compelling study of scale and proportion
A study in scale and proportion, this modernist single-family home by Leckie Studio Architecture + Design features a central three-sided courtyard that draws light deep into the centre portion of a relatively long and narrow floor plan. The scheme in effect introduces a third ‘middle yard’ to otherwise typical front and rear yards.

When visiting this understated manufacturing loft for the first time, we were captivated by the intrinsic elements of raw masonry walls, the distressed timber structure and the abundance of natural light. Its immediate connection with the urban context captures the noise of city traffic, the views of elevated trains and the Chicago’s most iconic architecture. A house presented Otto Walker Architects with dramatic views and a choice site. Using a mix of raw timbers and chunky, native stones, Otto developed a concept that responded to the client’s specific wishes.“The materials are intrinsic to the area, and it’s still a bit of an Alpine feel that just seems to make sense there,” says Otto. “The client wanted lots of views, and indoor/outdoor living was also a component.
