Frame Wood

Frame Wood is a contemporary timber house that reinterprets the traditional half-timbered structure through a minimal and monolithic lens. The project celebrates the expressive nature of the wooden frame, allowing its tectonic language to shape both the exterior and interior. Caption Instead of replicating the familiar pitched-roof silhouette of classical half-timbered homes, the design adopts a barnhouse form – simple, compact, and bold in presence. The result is a calm architectural volume that merges modern restraint with structural honesty. Caption A double wooden beam defines the horizontal rhythm of the main living volume, while a light steel frame contrasts with the timber in the carport area, adding precision and l... Meer

Hayes Pavilion

This stunning pavilion was the perfect solution to a previously disjointed outdoor living space. The owners had two existing large outdoor patios and an outdoor kitchen, which were exposed to the elements and felt disconnected. The goal was to have a covered space, connecting the two patio areas, while providing respite from the sun, which would make the spaces much more comfortable and usable. Now, the pavilion provides large seating areas for dining, relaxing, and entertaining.  The pavilion is charming enough to have a private dining experience and large enough to entertain 20 for a party. Breach House

This architectural project took a relatively modern property that was built in the 90s and upgraded it to 21st-century performance standards, as well as enhancing its overall character by creating spaces that were more enjoyable to live in. The architect brief involved adding a rear extension, creating a more open ground floor, removing the first-floor ceiling and adding a mezzanine floor.  David Vallinsky The design also demonstrates our use of timber frame extension constructions, wood fibre insulation, and lime plaster. This achieved our goal of reducing the total embodied carbon of the scheme, a key feature in our sustainable design. David Vallinsky The property is situated in Brockley, South London. Detail: A balanced carbon-based design for The Arbor House

The Steele Project

For many years, the homeowners of this stunning lakeside timber frame desired a custom home on their rare site which would blend both of their very different styles, while highlighting the unbelievable panoramic water views. On a clear day, one can see for miles and even count the many islands in the distance. In fact, the homeowner used to climb the antennae of his former home just to take in the seemingly endless views. OakBridge Timber Framing/Kris Miller Photography OakBridge Timber Framing/Kris Miller Photography Guests are greeted by breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Erie which are magnificently framed like pieces of art by the oak timbers. Once the soft glow of evening arrives, the home takes on a stylish, luxurious, sw... Meer

Light Atelier

LRVO House extension

In the Preux district, on the edge of Saint-Herblain, France, 1980's identical houses line up, only distinguished by their pale colors. Carefully placed above the garage, the LRVO extension takes advantage of the orientation of the plot and extends the house toward the road, facing west. A simple, one-piece volume, radically wrapped in wood cladding, on the walls as well as on the roof, dialogues with the pavilion. Like a sketch of an archetypal house, this new living space is part of the existing building through a fine dialogue with the current roof slopes. Delicately placed on the garage, the timber frame project contrasts in its materiality, without however erasing the particular geometry of the pavilion which supports it. Inside, VOU... Meer

Eco, biobased villa near Amsterdam, Netherlands

The house has been designed according to the sustainable principles of biobased, ecological construction. In the design and construction of this house, we carefully looked at the orientation, the sun and the usual wind direction (for example, for the possibilities for night ventilation). The sun has a lot of influence on the shape and the layout. The house is constructed from a vapour permeable timber frame construction system, delivered on site as prefabricated elements. All the insulation materials above the ground are natural. Martijn Heil The plots are relative small in this project. The neighbouring home is relative close by and provide much shade in winter. The clients have therefore chosen not to create a roof overhang on... Meer

Ha'ne Sushi

The brief for Hane Sushi was simple, just like the design intent - design a fresh, clean, contemporary and simple setting for a new sushi train restaurant in Eaton’s Hill Village. We worked closely with the client to develop a paired back, light and airy aesthetic, quite different from other Sushi Restaurants they had done before. By keeping the material palette and colour selections minimal, we were able to work within the client’s budget. We carefully selected finishes that enhanced moments in the plan, like the warm Tasmanian oak timber frame over the sushi bar, which really works to frame the action going on within the sushi bar, and highlight the food on the sushi train. While the organic nature of the varied coloured blue... Meer

Brixton Windmill Education and Community Centre

Squire & Partners have completed a new Education and Community Centre adjacent to Brixton Windmill for Friends of Windmill Gardens (FoWG) and Lambeth Council. The centre will support activities hosted by the Grade II* listed heritage building, and secure its use for future generations.   History of Brixton Windmill Brixton Windmill is a Grade II* listed structure built in 1816 as a working flour mill – locally known as Ashby’s Mill after the family of millers – set within Windmill Gardens at the end of Blenheim Gardens just off Brixton Hill.   The mill ceased production in 1934, and was first opened to the public in the 1960s when the land around it was laid out as a public park. Following intermittent p... Meer

Amenia farmhouse renovation

Located on a pastoral piece of property in Amenia, NY, this 200 year old farmhouse oozes with charm and grace. Old timbers line the ceilings, wide floorboards are worn by decades of use, and eccentric moments are scattered throughout. Although stately and proud, the existing home showed its age: walls sagged, floors sloped, and an ill-conceived addition felt like a disjointed accessory. Perhaps most notably, the home lacked any relationship to the beautiful property. Rather, the home cocooned its users in intimate, dark interiors — charming on a snowy winter day, but less so on a glorious summer evening.   My clients bought the farmhouse in 2000 as a country getaway from New York City. Over the course of many summers and weeken... Meer

House AD

The single-family house AD is situated in the foothills of PolhovGradec Dolomites, in the vicinity of the capital Ljubljana. Its architectural design follows the existing contours of the sloping terrain. There are two entirely different views of the building being developed from either the basement level or from the ground floor. Looking onto the single-storey part, two interconnected perpendicular masses are revealed. The two volumes are placed on top of the green landscape and covered with flat green roof, enveloped in a detailed metalfascia.Whereas the full extent of the building’s form can finally be observed from the basement level – the delicate top structure with accommodation spaces is being supported by an almost entire... Kew Tree House

The owners wanted to upgrade an internally awkward and dark middle suburban Californian Bungalow into a light, modern 3 bedroom + study residence. There was a small group of huge trees in the backyard that the owners loved, so they became integral to the design of the new addition. The rear extension has substantial north facing windows that utilise these existing trees for shading from the summer sun. An angled eave overhang is provided for these windows where there are no trees to offer shading.   The extension was conceived as a single volume of efficient construction. It has a simple flat roof with interconnected spaces differentiated by changes in floor level that follow the sloping site. The rear decks also terrace downward towa... Meer
