The five elements, or godai, found in Japanese Buddhist thought, are a common theme in popular anime. They define the characters, provide the source of their powers, and shape their environment

Applying these elements to specific regions within the office plan, we provide a sense of identity, placemaking, and wayfinding for the employees while creating a journey through an anime world defined by them

We created a distinct vision for each space, each rooted in a different aspect of anime and the elements. The furniture, artwork, scenic treatments, color palettes, material finishes, lighting schemes, and plant design all subscribe to this vision

The Break Room inspiration was a period anime street scene with food carts, market stalls, wheat paste posters, and paper lanterns. Hand painted signage delights with hidden references to anime-famous establishments

From burnt finishes on wood cladding to distressed cafe tables, no detail has been left untouched, bringing the scene to life just as an animation concept artist might

Japanese Onsen hot springs were the inspiration for the open collaboration space where where one can gather to huddle for a brainstorm or casually exchange ideas with teammates

The spaces are clad in cypress, framed and elevated off the concrete floor, and built out with the accouterments of traditional Japanese sauna and baths

Beyond the harmonious central core, the anime theme is applied in lighter touches within circulation areas and open office spaces

Whereas the core spaces were based on specific locations found within anime and connected to the element of harmony, these more open spaces take a wider view and connect to the other four elements

Visiting talent is directed down long corridors with myriad doors to specialty sound studios. The recording studio hallway brings to life the elements of earth and water, while the sound editing and mixing studio hallway describes themes of wind and fire
