Embodied carbon
The project integrates several low-carbon and passive strategies tailored to Mediterranean climates. Key strategies among these are:
- Natural Shading with Native Vegetation and Pergolas: Utilizing locally adapted plants in conjunction with pergolas to create natural shade significantly reduces the need for mechanical cooling, enhances outdoor and indoor thermal comfort, and supports local biodiversity.
- Intelligent Lighting Management (DALI Technology): Implementing a lighting system controlled by DALI technology enables automatic adjustment of light intensity based on building occupancy and the availability of natural daylight (daylight harvesting). This minimizes unnecessary energy consumption for lighting.
Operational Emissions / Energy
The implemented strategies—passive cooling, energy-efficient lighting, and the use of recycled materials—collectively contribute to a significantly reduced environmental impact by:
- Minimizing energy demand: Passive cooling techniques reduce the need for energy-intensive air conditioning, while energy-efficient lighting lowers electricity consumption for illumination.
- Reducing carbon emissions: Lower energy consumption directly translates to fewer greenhouse gas emissions from power generation. Utilizing recycled materials often requires less energy in their production compared to virgin materials, further reducing the project's carbon footprint.
- Conserving natural resources: Choosing recycled materials lessens the demand for extracting and processing new raw materials, thus conserving natural resources and reducing associated environmental damage like habitat destruction and pollution.
- Reducing waste: Employing recycled materials diverts waste from landfills, minimizing landfill volume and the associated environmental problems like methane emissions and land use.
- Improving resource efficiency: By prioritizing passive design and efficient technologies, the project maximizes the use of available resources like natural light and ventilation, leading to a more sustainable and resource-conscious building.
Afterlife
The design of Cloudworks GV thoughtfully incorporates flexibility and circularity for a more sustainable future. The implementation of open-plan layouts allows for adaptable use of spaces over time, accommodating evolving needs without significant structural changes. Furthermore, the selection of specific interior elements like acoustic panels and fiber boards prioritizes their ease of disassembly and potential for future reuse in other applications. This deliberate material choice aligns with the principles of a circular economy, aiming to minimize waste and maximize the lifespan and utility of building components.
