Embodied carbon
Cradle to Cradle
The Fire Station in Straubenhardt was built according to the Cradle to Cradle principle, emphasising resource efficiency and use of healthy, recyclable materials. The building is both a valuable raw material depot and material warehouse.
- Material Selection and Recyclability: 79 components and 248 materials were tested for health, separability, energy efficiency, and carbon emissions, with adhesives, paints, and plasters avoided to facilitate future reuse.
- Circularity Passport® — Buildings: A digital passport documents all materials and disassembly information to enable future recirculation and urban mining.
- Benefits: Healthy interiors, easy maintenance and replacement of components, flexible uses via extensions, and implementation of biodiversity concepts.

Ceiling and wall panels (Cradle to Cradle)
- Acoustic panels in fire protection class B-s1, d0 were installed in the wide corridors. These panels were also used in the modern rooms on the upper floor and in the lounge in the fire engine hall area.
- For fire protection reasons, acoustic panels were used in the roofed exterior area of the open parking deck. These panels meet the requirements of fire protection class A2-s1,d0 (non-combustible).

Operational Emissions / Energy
The fire station is connected to the local district heating network and heated using renewable energies. It features a green roof and any rainwater that seeps into the site is collected and stored for firefighting exercises.
Afterlife
The building’s design allows for easy dismantling, with minimal layers and materials used. Using screws instead of adhesives simplifies the deconstruction process.
The building’s construction minimises the use of adhesives and assembly foams, enabling easy separation of materials and preventing downcycling (the process of recycling materials into products of lesser quality or reduced functionality).
