Embodied carbon

Low Carbon

The Trinity building achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating.

Over the course of a year, fourteen buildings were demolished on-site — the majority were constructed from traditional brick and timber on concrete foundations. 99 percent of the demolition waste was recycled. The remaining one percent was deemed hazardous. More than 50,000 bricks were hand-picked, cleaned, and packaged for off-site reuse.  Additionally, over 260 tonnes of metal and 360 tonnes of wood were processed for off-site recycling programmes. The remaining concrete foundations, non-reusable bricks, and asphalt were stockpiled and crushed on-site. Around 10,000 cubic metres of these crushed materials were reused as certified 6F2 capping in roads, piling mats, and hard stands.

Brick facades

  • To minimise heat loss and maintain thermal comfort, the brick facades are airtight and highly insulated.
  • Brick is exceptionally durable, meaning fewer resources are required for repairs.
  • Made from naturally occurring clay, the bricks emit no VOCs, are chemically inert, and feature a high water absorption rate.
  • Brick is fully recyclable and naturally fire-resistant.
  • Brick provides excellent acoustic insulation, as well as warmth and texture.
  • The bricks are produced in the UK, minimising transport emissions, and supporting low embodied carbon associated with local sourcing.

Low Carbon

Sustainability measures

  • Cross-ventilation reduces the need for mechanical systems.
  • Efficient glazing and passive solar design optimise daylight, minimising the need for artificial lighting.
  • The hospital is part of an efficient district heating network that supplies heat to its buildings and surrounding residential premises.
  • The former golf course has been transformed into a large public park, featuring a Sustainable Urban Drainage System, new trees, and greenery. Low-maintenance landscaping supports biodiversity and reduces water use.
  • The hospital’s gardens store harvested rainwater.
  • The life-cycle environmental impact and cost of materials have been carefully considered.
