Embodied carbon
Haus 2+ is owned and used by Holzmarkt 25 cooperative. It was decided that, given the project’s tight budget, funds would be better spent on improving the building’s design than on pursuing a sustainability certification to increase its marketability.
Embodied carbon overview
Haus 2+ is built primarily in timber to achieve excellent embodied carbon performance. The structure combines spruce and pine timber-frame walls, spruce slab elements, larch facade cladding, and pine window frames. All wood is European-sourced and FSC-certified.
A cradle-to-gate LCA study using OneClick LCA Planetary (A1–A3) — raw material supply, transport, and manufacturing — calculated 217 kg CO2e/m2, earning the highest rating, Benchmark A.
Operational Emissions / Energy
Energy efficiency is supported by the site’s district heating system, high-performance wall insulation, and optimised windows that enable natural crossflow, passive stack ventilation, and generous daylight intake. Together, these strategies minimise reliance on mechanical systems and reduce operational energy demand.
The building also incorporates a green roof, which reduces soil sealing and creates habitat for insects, with irrigation provided by water drawn from the adjacent river.
Afterlife
Load-bearing elements are screw-connected rather than glued, allowing future disassembly and reuse.
