Embodied carbon
Efficient
Hemp‑lime blocks and timber provide thermal mass, insulation and carbon storage. Bio-sourced insulation like wood wool and sprayed hempcrete alsow contribute to lower embodied and stored carbon.
Operational Emissions / Energy
Low Carbon
Operational emissions are reduced through passive design strategies, including south-facing glazing with shading, thermal mass, cross-ventilation and Canadian wells. Rainwater harvesting and treatment, combined with solar thermal collectors and a biomass wood stove with boiler, make the house fully self-sufficient in energy and water.
Afterlife
Adaptive Reuse and Flexible Design Considerations
The project retains and retrofits an existing stone outbuilding and integrates new wings in timber and hemp-lime: timber, hemp and lime are fully biodegradable and can be returned to the earth at end of life.
