Embodied carbon

The Cape Flats Managed Aquifer Recharge plant is a key initiative in Cape Town’s long-term water resilience strategy, helping to secure a sustainable water supply while minimising reliance on surface water sources.

  • Durable masonry facades: Corobrik Silvergrey Satin face brick was chosen for its long-lasting and low-maintenance properties, as well as having a warm tone that harmonises with the sandy surroundings. This brick mitigates the corrosive coastal conditions while reducing the need for energy-intensive coatings or frequent upkeep.
  • Recycled and locally sourced materials: Excavated dune sand from the site was reused as backfill, reducing transportation emissions and material waste.

Operational Emissions / Energy

Low-carbon strategies include:

  • Optimised facade design: The filtration buildings feature angled brick fins along their east–west facades, minimising direct sunlight exposure while preventing algae growth in the filtration systems.
  • Energy efficiency: The facility’s filtration system is designed as a gravity-fed sequence, reducing the need for energy-intensive pumps.
  • Durability and longevity: Given the significant embedded energy in the extensive concrete structures required for subterranean water retention, sustainability efforts focused on ensuring long-term durability. The brickwork and concrete structures were selected to withstand harsh environmental conditions with minimal intervention.
  • Passive thermal strategies: The administrative building incorporates passive design elements to optimise natural lighting and ventilation, reducing reliance on artificial climate control.
  • Water efficiency: Low-flow sanitary fittings and waterless urinals were installed to minimise water usage.

Afterlife

  • Designing for adaptability: While the project wasn’t designed with specific alternative future functions in mind, the approach was influenced by the precedent of industrial structures being repurposed for new uses rather than demolished. The Managed Aquifer Recharge plant was designed to have lasting architectural value, making repurposing a more viable option.
  • Structural integrity for repurposing: The use of durable materials ensures the facility can accommodate future modifications without the need for a complete reconstruction.
