Service and maintenance emissions
The project maximises reuse through systematic material recovery: elm floorboards from the original structure became kitchen cabinetry, rosemary terracotta tiles from the demolished music room found new applications, and handmade Cumbrian burgundy bricks create visual continuity while supporting local craftsmanship.
Operational carbon reduction is achieved through Passivhaus principles: continuous thermal envelope with mineral wool insulation, mechanical ventilation heat recovery, air source heat pump, photovoltaic panels, and strategic cross-ventilation. These strategies significantly reduce energy consumption compared to conventional construction.
Embodied carbon is minimised through material reuse and selection of locally-sourced, low-impact materials where possible. The project prioritizes durability and adaptability, extending building lifespan and reducing future renovation needs.
