Service and maintenance emissions
We used Building Transparency Database. The building is in schematic design phase, therefore most of this carbon reduction data is not available yet, however the numbers above are projected targets.
Afterlife
As we are designing the building, we are thinking of its place not in the circular economy but also in its reintegration into nature through biodegradable materials. Almost all resin based materials we are searching for are bio-resins, renewable plant-based materials which can be recycled and moreover blend back to nature.
We are working on a structural system that is dismountable with mechanical fasteners. we are researching non-toxic tile and floor adhesives, that can be removed and ground back into another materials aggregate.
In short, we are conceptualizing a construction movie that can be played forward and then backwards with minimum carbon footprint in the cycle of material sourcing, assembly, use and service, maintenance, operation, dismounting and recycling.
Yes, especially doors and windows, panelized cladding, structure without cast in place concerete (ie dismountable structural steel with hollow metal steel slabs with insulation and non-combustable floor panels) Glass, steel, interior partition framing, all these elements will be specified to be assembled with a disassembly in mind. The goal would be an ikea cabinet that would be assembled when bought, disassembled when moving and reassembled in the new home. After the third move it would be ground to particles and find a new life as a light fixture for instance, an insulator, or a planter.
