Embodied carbon

Efficient

Embodied carbon is reduced by preserving the historic town hall fabric, avoiding demolition and rebuild, and specifying durable clinker brick with a long service life.

  • From the outset in 2017, the project focused on sustainable urban planning and careful renovation of the listed town hall. A key strategy was the preservation of as much of the historic fabric as possible, avoiding the emissions associated with demolition and replacement.
  • The new extension was inserted where a 1960s annex once stood, allowing continuity without increasing the site footprint.
  • Durable, low-maintenance clinker bricks — developed as a custom Hagemeister Sonderbrand Type K185 — were used across both facades and roofs, reducing the need for future replacement.
  • Precast elements with brick slips also supported material efficiency and construction precision.

Operational Emissions / Energy

Efficient

Operational performance is improved through the use of a combined heat and power plant, triple glazing, abundant daylighting, external solar shading, and concrete core activation.

  • Energy and heating are supplied by a combined heat and power plant, ensuring efficient generation.
  • Triple-glazed aluminium windows (Schüco AWS 90.SI+, anodised light bronze) and curtain walling improve thermal performance, complemented by external solar shading.
  • Abundant daylighting reduces reliance on artificial lighting, while concrete component activation (thermal mass activation) lowers energy demand.

Together, these measures deliver a town hall and library with significantly reduced operational emissions compared to conventional benchmarks.

Afterlife

A future-proof design allows the building to adapt or extend without major structural intervention.

  • The project demonstrates how civic buildings can be future-proofed for changing needs. The preserved historic structure was modernised rather than rebuilt and the new extension was designed to allow adaptation without major structural intervention. Additional space can be created without altering the external walls.
  • The project consolidates municipal offices, services, and the library within one building, creating synergies and reducing the need for separate facilities. It also reinforces the urban block through redensification, closing gaps in the fabric to make more efficient use of land.
