Embodied carbon
The carbon emissions and carbon capture for Shebara Resort were assessed through a detailed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). This process involved calculating the embodied carbon of construction materials by using specialised LCA software tools integrated with internationally recognised databases such as One Click LCA, Ecoinvent, and ICE (Inventory of Carbon and Energy). These databases provide emission factors for a wide range of building materials, covering extraction, processing, transport, and end-of-life stages.
In addition to emissions, the analysis also accounts for the biogenic carbon captured in renewable materials, such as timber and bamboo, which naturally sequester CO2 during their growth phase and store it throughout their service life in the building. The calculation includes all major components of the resort, such as the structure, envelope, finishes, and fixed interior elements, while external site works, temporary works, and mechanical/electrical equipment are typically excluded as per standard LCA boundaries.
This comprehensive approach ensures that the results reflect the true embodied carbon footprint of the resort’s construction while also highlighting the contribution of carbon-storing materials towards offsetting emissions.
