Embodied carbon

Efficient

The strategy focused on a low-impact, economically efficient approach to construction:

  • Compact Addition: The extension was designed as a compact addition to the existing volume, which inherently minimizes the amount of new material required per square meter of added space.

  • Existing Substance Retention: A careful handling of the existing substance and clear interfaces with the original structure minimized demolition and maximized the conservation of the existing building's embodied carbon.

  • Material Selection: Materials were chosen for low production effort and recycled content in line with the requirements for the klimaaktiv Gold declaration, effectively targeting lower-carbon options over conventional materials.

Operational Emissions / Energy

Energy Neutral

Operational performance was a primary focus, achieving a very high level of energy self-sufficiency:

  • Renewable Energy Generation: A large new PV system was installed with a high annual yield of 202,435 kWhEnd/a, indicating a substantial offset of the building’s electricity consumption.

  • Low Energy Demand: The building achieved a Primary Energy Demand (PEB) of 82 kWh/m2a, reflecting a highly efficient envelope and optimized systems.

  • Passive Design: The new central zone is designed with skylights and a generous facade opening on the north side, which minimizes the need for artificial lighting and mechanical ventilation.

Service and maintenance emissions

Efficient

The strategies focused on material health and durability to reduce long-term maintenance and replacement cycles:

  • Durability: Materials were explicitly chosen and applied for durability to extend the service life of the components.

  • Material Health: The materials applied contain no hazardous substances, which simplifies end-of-life recycling and reduces risks during maintenance and replacement.

Afterlife

The design incorporates short-term programmatic flexibility through features like: mobile partition walls in group rooms, enabling conversion into a large hall for events; and the multi-purpose room's connection to the music room and garden, facilitating diverse school and community activities.
