Afterlife
The design emphasises longevity through flexibility. The new extension features an open-plan layout to facilitate easy spatial reconfiguration, supporting future uses such as live/work arrangements or multi-generational living. Additionally, choosing free-standing, demountable joinery over fixed components improves end-of-life adaptability. This approach, together with a durable, high-performance envelope, greatly extends the property’s service life.
While full deconstruction can be complex during renovation, this direct reuse of materials and the high recyclability of elements like minimal-frame glazing form the core of the circular economy strategy. The project preserved and restored 25% of the original flooring and incorporated reclaimed surplus bricks and PIR insulation in the new build.
