Sustainability Report
Embodied carbon
The project’s material palette and construction methods were selected with embodied carbon reduction in mind. The Structurally Insulated Panel (SIP) system was chosen for its efficiency in fabrication and assembly. CNC-cut with precision to minimise factory waste, the panels were installed with negligible on-site offcuts.
Aside from the metal roof and selected facades, the dwelling is clad in Weathertex, an Australian reconstituted timber product that carries Global GreenTag Platinum, PEFC, and Responsible Wood certifications. Its use significantly reduced embodied carbon compared with cement sheet cladding and offered a safer, low-VOC installation process.
Operational Emissions / Energy
Passive Pleat achieves a 7.1-star NatHERS (Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme) energy rating, an Australian government standard that models the heating and cooling efficiency of a home on a scale from zero to ten stars. A 7.1-star rating indicates excellent thermal performance and low energy demand, consistent with the project’s Passive House approach.
The dwelling also meets the Passive House Classic standard for airtightness, recording less than 0.6 air changes per hour. Though formal certification was postponed, it performs to Passive House benchmarks, combining SIP construction with heat-recovery ventilation and rooftop solar generation to maintain a stable indoor climate with minimal energy use. The resulting envelope delivers exceptional thermal comfort and air quality, requiring little active heating or cooling throughout the year.
Service and maintenance emissions
Designed for long-term resilience, the home’s SIP and timber construction establishes a durable, low-maintenance envelope with an intended lifespan exceeding fifty years.
By reducing the need for repairs or material replacement, the design extends the life cycle of components and limits resource consumption over time.
Afterlife
The project embodies the studio’s evolving approach to circular design — prioritising endurance, adaptability, and materials that perform well without compromising health or environmental integrity.
