Afterlife
The design prioritised longevity and resilience within its intended residential scheme (social-rent housing for diverse demographics) over a structural system highly adaptable to entirely different programmes (like commercial or office space). The extended service life reduces the need for premature adaptive reuse, focusing instead on long-term residential stability supported by robust, low-maintenance materials.
The project features design choices that support future resource recovery. A main aspect is the separation of materials: the facade uses profiled steel sheet panels, which are mechanically fastened, making them easy to dismantle. This distinct separation between the structural brick piers and the non-load-bearing steel cladding simplifies material sorting, enabling a cleaner recovery pathway for these high-value materials and promoting a practical approach to the circular economy.
