Embodied carbon
The project revitalizes a derelict site in the inner city and emphasizes the reuse of existing urban structures and higher-density development rather than urban sprawl. These choices minimize land-use impacts and promote the reuse of infrastructure, supporting a positive whole-life strategy. The design incorporates extensive landscaping and green roofs/terraces, which help protect the concrete roofs and enhance thermal inertia. This reduces operational carbon emissions.
Operational Emissions / Energy
Passive thermal control can be achieved through shading devices and ample natural ventilation for passive cooling. Rainwater capture systems, along with shaded gardens and overhangs, contribute to passive cooling and effective stormwater management. Public descriptions highlight clean energy generation and energy efficiency as project goals, such as on-site photovoltaic (PV) systems and other clean energy solutions mentioned in press summaries.
Service and maintenance emissions
The green roofs and terraces incorporate water retention and passive irrigation through rainwater reservoirs beneath raised flooring, which irrigate by capillarity. This low-maintenance approach reduces the use of potable water and minimizes energy consumption for ongoing irrigation.
Afterlife
The design emphasises porosity, durability, and long-life public use; the design also prioritises flexible spaces that can be reconfigured. UNA’s public project pages and press note the building’s programmatic flexibility and porous ground floor.
