Afterlife

Adaptive reuse informs the entire project strategy. By viewing the original Victorian terrace, Type Studio has prioritised interventions that allow the building to evolve alongside its occupants' needs. This approach honours the inherent resilience of the terraced typology, ensuring that the current refurbishment remains an open-ended process rather than a final state, which significantly extends the functional lifespan of the existing structure.

To facilitate circularity, the design prioritises mechanical connections over permanent adhesives. Components such as the bespoke ash joinery and the clay floor tiles are installed to be reversible, allowing for clean removal and recovery at the end of their current service life. By avoiding composite materials and high-impact synthetic coatings, the project ensures that its primary elements, brick, timber, and terracotta, can be easily disassembled and returned to the material cycle, effectively transforming the house into a depot of high-value resources for future generations.
